No mess when filling it up with water and no mess when removing the cubes. You just shake it and pour it in the glass.

I was looking for an ice cube tray with the lid on it. The problem with this item is it unnecessarily consumes a lot of [valuable] freezer space. I wanted a no-spill ice cube trayand I should have just got one of those with the lid that pops on the tray. With this design it has a lot of air space above where the ice cube tray itself stops, which is a waste of space. If you filled it full with water you'd just have one big chunk of ice.
