I was happy to find the Blow-out plug as a standard item. Something like this is
absolutely nessary when winterizing the water systems in an RV. I had built my own version by modifying a standard with parts purchased at a hardware store. The
purchased plug costs less tha my homemade version and will probably last longer
as it is one piece.
Although it doesn't freeze that often in Florida, we do have times
when we need to purge water to prevent damage to our lines and
fittings. This little gadget does the trick. Attached to the city water
input connection on my fiver, go inside and open up the faucets,
attach an electric air pump and turn it on. Two to three minutes and
the lines are pretty empty. One word of caution however...open the
faucets BEFORE you turn the air pump on. The PSI from the pump
can overload fittings and cause unwanted disconnects at joints.
A couple of bucks for a product that assists in quick purging of water
from lines without having to crawl under the unit and use the drain
valves every time.
Great accessory for the pre-winterize drain. Really cuts back on the run time to get anti-freeze throughout the system. Really though, it takes two people to use this item. Additionally, it took a bit of force to get the adapter to open the air chuck. Thus, the 'partner' (DW) will have to work the valves and faucets.
This is an adequate plug, made from plastic, that screws into your shore water line. However, there is nothing substantial for your air compressor to attach to. You'll need one of those valves found on bicycle tire pumps to attach to this plug. They are the kind that have a lever you rotate and that squeezes rubber against the tire stem for a seal. Finding one of those for an air compressor is not easy! I'd rather have a brass blow-out plug that has a quick-connect fitting suitable for connection to an air compressor!
I live in a very cold climate which freezes hard every year. I blow out all the faucets, tanks etc with this and only use anti freeze in the sink drain P traps, grey and black water tanks. I have never used anti freeze in the fresh water lines and have never had a problem with freezing my pump or lines. Saves a lot of time and effort and eliminates the tast of anti freeze in your lines.
