Cleaning and Maintaining Your Rubber Roof
Love them or hate them, rubber roofs have some definite advantages to offer on an RV. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is highly resistant to UV (ultraviolet) rays, ozone and oxidants, plus it can withstand severe hot or cold temperatures. About the only down side of having a rubber roof is that they can rip and tear more easily than other RV roof types, so you will want to be extra careful of low-hanging tree limbs when pulling into a campsite.

The key to protecting and maintaining your rubber roof is to keep it clean and treated with a rubber roof protectant. This not only lets your rubber roof last for years, but it also helps reduce unsightly streaks down the side of the RV because of normal dirt and grime and a naturally-occurring chalky residue that washes over the roof edge and down the sidewall of the RV. For that reason, cleaning your rubber roof should be a part of regular RV cleaning and maintenance, done four to six times per year, or as often as it takes to keep the surface white.

When cleaning your EPDM rubber roof, first carefully remove any leaves, small branches or other debris that may have collected. Always use a cleaner formulated for use on rubber roofs. Read and follow the manufacturer's directions, measuring carefully if the preparation is a concentrate that must be mixed with water. Some cleaners do not require rinsing, but if the one you use instructs you to rinse the roof surface, do so thoroughly. Use a soft to medium bristle wash brush, a mop or soft, clean rags to apply the cleaner, as the product manufacturer recommends. Remember, you don't want to cause a rip or tear in the roof surface. For that reason, an old pair of sneakers is a good choice for this roof-top job.

As you clean, look for any rips, tears or cracks in the rubber surface. Use only a repair kit or sealer designed for rubber roofs to carefully mend breaks in the surface. EPDM can also be purchased in liquid form and painted over the existing rubber roof for repair purposes.

Follow cleaning and any necessary repairs with a protective treatment to maintain UV and weather resistance. If the brand of rubber roof cleaner you use also offers a treatment, that's the formula to choose, since the two products are likely designed for use together for maximum effectiveness. If your cleaner's manufacturer does not offer a treatment, read labels carefully to determine what protectant formula will work on EPDM. Again, follow directions carefully when applying the protectant.

Never use any product made for aluminum, fiberglass, asphalt or other type of roof surface on a rubber roof. Some products containing oils, solvents or certain petroleum distillates will cause swelling and bubbling of the rubber roof surface. Use only products that say specifically on the label that they are designed for use on EPDM rubber roofs.
