Great Tasting Water
Whether you're just beginning to dewinterize your RV for the
season or you've been enjoying it all winter long, it's time to
do some spring cleaning on your fresh water system. Clean, safe,
fresh-tasting drinking water doesn't have to come from a bottle
purchased from the supermarket. A few simple steps will ensure
that the water coming out of your RV faucets is sparkling clean
and fresh.
If you winterized your RV for storage during the winter, with
freshwater antifreeze pumped throughout your system, drain and
flush all the antifreeze out by filling your freshwater tank or
connecting to city water to run fresh tap water throughout your
system. Open all faucets, including the exterior shower, and
flush the toilet until you see no traces of pink freshwater
antifreeze. After all traces of antifreeze are gone, open the
water heater bypass and reconnect the water line to your
refrigerator ice maker, if your fridge is so equipped. (Never
use freshwater antifreeze in the icemaker, as it will permanently
damage it.) Allow water to fill your water heater's tank, then
let it drain out to help flush it. (It's also a great time to
replace the anode rod to absorb mineral buildup and corrosion
inside the tank.)
If you have noticed an undesirable tank taste, or if you just
want to make sure your fresh water tank is sparkling clean
inside, close the freshwater drain valve and fill the tank with
a solution of baking soda and water or a specially formulated
freshwater tank cleaner. Take your RV for a spin around the
block a time or two or over a bumpy road to slosh the solution
around inside the tank. Run some of the solution through the
faucets, then drain the freshwater tank.
You are now ready to refill the freshwater tank or reconnect to
city water. Be sure you use a non-toxic drinking water hose that
meets FDA guidelines for this step. Garden hoses are not
constructed with the same quality standards as hoses specially
made for RV drinking water, and may impart foul taste or odor
to your drinking water.
Spring is the perfect time to replace your water filter as well,
to trap contaminants and filter out bad tastes and odors. An
exterior filter attached between your RV and the city water
connection filters water before it enters your RV's system, and
minimizes or eliminates taste, odor and contaminants at the
source. An interior filter can serve a single faucet, such as in
the kitchen or bathroom, or can sometimes be located to filter
water going throughout your RV's freshwater system. Check
your RV owner's manual or have your RV inspected by a
knowledgeable RV technician to determine the best place to
locate an interior water filter.
Once your system is clean and the freshwater tank filled, you
may want to add a specially formulated drinking water freshener
to eliminate stale taste and formation of slime and algae.
