General RV tire safety tips

December 2009 RV Tips and Advice by

Taking care of your vehicle's tires is necessary, whether you're driving a car, truck, SUV or RV. But many people don't think tires need any attention, according to the Rubber Manufacturers' Association. It estimates that 29 million U.S. drivers believe their tires require no maintenance.

RV technician and author Mark Polk offers offers some RV tire safety tips with RVtechtips.com. He says one of the most important things to do is to check the tire pressure on a regular basis and to adjust the air according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Avoid checking when they're hot, however, since you won't get an accurate reading.

Overloading your RV can also be a problem for your tires. Polk says failure to maintain correct tire pressure with a full load can result in fast tread wear, uneven wear, poor handling and excessive heat buildup, all of which can lead to tire failure.

Exposure to the sun and air can cause tires to deteriorate as well. It's important to check tires for signs of wear and tear often, and to keep them covered and off the ground when you're not driving on them.

Washing your tires with soap and water is okay, but Polk advises against over-washing or using products that make the rubber shine since both can wear down the protective compounds in the tires and cause them to age prematurely.
