Tips for using an RV slide-out

December 2009 RV Tips and Advice by

Slide-outs can add a lot of living space to an RV, but they're not completely hassle-free. There are some things to keep in mind if your vehicle has one or even two that will make them easier to use and fold away.

According to TheFunTimesGuide.com, you should always check around your vehicle before opening up a slide-out. Trees and utility posts could block the device from opening completely and could also damage the RV.

RVTravel.com adds that it's important to check the floor for dirt, sand and other debris before opening a slide-out room. And, keep in mind that things like twigs or birds' nests could end up on the roof of the RV slide-out as well.

It's important to follow your manufacturer's advice for lubricating the device that opens and closes the room to keep it functioning well. They also need to be sealed correctly to avoid water leaks.

Several slide-out users commented on an RVtravel.com blog that making sure the RV is level is important and that keeping the engine running while opening or closing the devices ensure the proper power.

Remember, when all else fails, most have a hand-crank option to open or close your additional room!
