Holiday border crossing tips

Travelers planning on crossing over the border back in the U.S. during the holiday season are encouraged to expedite their trip by having the proper documents, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

A new initiative - the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative - implemented earlier this year requires U.S. and Canadian citizens over the age of 16 to present a valid, acceptable travel document when entering the U.S. by land or sea. Approved documents include a passport, enhanced driver's license or identification card or a Trusted Traveler Program Card.

In addition, CBP encourages travelers to check out the "Know Before You Go" section of its website to avoid penalties and fines for importing prohibited items. Bringing certain fruits, meats and dairy products into the U.S. is not allowed and it will make your border processing go faster if you know this ahead of time.

Travelers are also encouraged to prepare for their border inspection by having documents easily accessible. Border crossing wait times are updated hourly online so individuals can monitor busy times and possibly re-route their trip to a different crossing if necessary.

The CPB website at Customs.gov has all the information travelers will need to make their border crossing as simple as possible.
