Portable first-aid kits can be a lifesaver in the wilderness

February 2012 RV News by

Scrapes, cuts and bruises can be common when spending the day out on a trail, and hikers know the importance of taking care of these minor ailments to prevent running into complications later. A portable first aid kit can fit easily inside of a backpack or fanny pack and ideally be able to remedy most of the nicks and maladies encountered on a camping trip.

When deciding which first-aid kit to purchase, a camper should choose one that has a wide variety of supplies to deal with unexpected situations. For example, the Trek II first-aid kit has an assortment of bandages, disinfectant and surgical tools that can address many common infirmities.

Gauze pads, knuckle fabric bandages and butterfly closures ensure that even the most oddly-shaped wounds can be protected. Iodine pads and antiseptic towelettes can scrub dirt from cuts picked up in a fall, and needle and ankle tape can strengthen rolled ankles from a hiking accident. The manual included with this kit offers tips and suggestions on how to apply proper first-aid, which is a plus for campers with little or no medical experience.

These little packs can prevent infection and complications from wounds, which is of critical importance when in the woods with no professional help around.
