State parks report positive 2009 attendance

January 2010 RV Industry and Lifestyle by

A new survey released by the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD) has echoed what many have believed throughout the economic downturn - that camping and RVing really is a recession-proof family vacation option.

RV Business reports that out of 28 parks that reported on their 2009 camping activity, all but one reported increases. The NASPD says there was an overall increase in camping of 7.38 percent compared to the 2008 figures. The only state that saw declines in 2009 was Hawaii, which has been hit hard by a significant drop in tourism.

The 28 states that participated in the survey also reported a significant increase in state park attendance for 2009. Overall, visits to state parks were up nearly 7 percent during 2009. The only two states that reported fewer visitors last year were New Jersey and Arkansas.

"In today's economy, people are returning to simpler lifestyles," said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. "Historically economic downturns have resulted in increased participation in outdoor recreation. Nature-based activities provide fun, affordable recreation and vacation opportunities for individuals and families."ADNFCR-2712-ID-19541513-ADNFCR
