While many RV owners enjoy doing their own service, installation and repair work, sometimes it’s best to let a professional handle the job. In this new series, we spotlight instances where oversights, miscalculations or lack of proper tools resulted in unexpected—and unhappy—results. Featured examples are based on actual Camping World customer experiences.
Furnace Fiasco
An RV owner had removed and reinstalled his own furnace to perform a repair, but he failed to do a leak test once the furnace was reinstalled. Unknown to him or to his family, there was an LP leak at the furnace. After he reinstalled the furnace, the family went on an overnight camping trip in the RV. When they got up the next morning and lit the stove to make coffee, a major explosion occurred, severely burning two family members.
While there are millions of liquid propane (LP) systems in RVs across the country, very few LP-related accidents actually occur each year. Handled properly, LP is quite safe but if proper safety precautions are not taken, fire and explosions can occur. All Camping World service centers are fully equipped to remove, repair, reinstall and leak-check any LP appliance, included furnaces, refrigerators, stoves and water heaters.
