NASCAR teams up with celebrities to raise awareness for COPD

Some well-known celebrities, including NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, are teaming up to raise awareness for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which is the nation's fourth leading cause of death.

The Drive4COPD "Race for the Missing Millions" began prior to Patrick's NASCAR debut (and crash) at Daytona Speedway. Emmy-nominated actor Jim Belushi, Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, Grammy Award-winning country music star Patty Loveless and former pro football great Michael Strahan each took four laps around the speedway before hitting the road in RVs to make 14 "pit stops" to raise awareness for the disease and encourage people to get screened for it.

Belushi, who ended his leg of the tour in Boston, had to deal with winter weather along the way.

"Driving around in an RV is, um, a little scary," he told the Boston Herald. "They are kind of lightweight, you know. I was the heaviest thing in it. It was very Clark Griswold."

The campaign will continue throughout the NASCAR season with screenings available at race events.

"We are thrilled that this campaign has become the official health initiative of NASCAR, making its first 'Pit Stop' during the popular Daytona weekend and coming to many other races this season," said NASCAR's Steve Phelps. ADNFCR-2712-ID-19622315-ADNFCR
