Olympic visitors have several lodging options

February 2010 RV Destinations by

The many different lodging options available in the Vancouver area for Winter Olympic tourists may be to blame for the fact that some RV parks are operating at less than full occupancy. Even U.S. skiing gold medalist Bode Miller, who stayed in an RV during the 2006 games in Torino, Italy, is staying in a condo with other members of the U.S. ski team this time around.

The Montreal Gazette newspaper reports that while many hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses are reporting good occupancy rates, Vancouver's temporary RV park at Jericho Beach does not have the occupancy it expected.

"I don't think the demand was quite what we thought it would be," the park's general manager, Stan Duckworth, told the newspaper.

Duckworth says that occupancy stands at about 70 percent at the 110 RV campsites that are operating for the Olympic games, despite the fact that nightly rates are often considerably cheaper than staying at hotels or guesthouses.

The group operating the temporary RV parks for the Olympics, Duckworth Management Group, was supposed to operate 350 sites across two separate locations. Instead, the lack of interest has caused them to run fewer sites and to locate all of them at the Jericho Beach location. They cost $95 per night.ADNFCR-2712-ID-19630364-ADNFCR
