Road closures, delayed openings slated at Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park this spring may want to check ahead to ensure their trip won't be effected by work that will cause officials to close roads and delay facility openings.

The park will be undertaking a number of projects to improve its roads and facilities, including campground and picnic restrooms, trailheads as well as a popular campground. Other projects include making comfort stations accessible, cemetery maintenance, and building painting and roof repair.

The $93,300,000 worth of improvements will be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as well as previously-authorized Federal Lands Highway Program funds.

Included in the closures are the Balsam Mountain campground, Heintooga Ridge Road, Smokemont campground, Clingmans Dome, Cades Cove, Gaitlinburg Bypass, Roaring Fork, Cherokee Orchard, Little River and James Creek trailheads as well as The Sinks.

The park's website features regularly updated information about the projects as well as road and facility closures. Visitors are encouraged to visit nps.gov/grsm for more information about project areas and work schedules to help them better plan their visit.
