National Park Service and Civil War Preservation Trust announce 2010 park day

The National Park Service reports that volunteers from around the country will team up with the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) to help clean and restore America's historic Civil War battlefields, cemeteries and shrines on "Park Day," which will be held on Saturday, April 10.

The preservation event will include nearly 80 historic sites in 24 states.

Participants will gather at the sites to help with activities that range from trash pick-up to trail building. In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts and have an opportunity to learn about the significance of the site.

Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland is one of the sites where volunteers are needed. Among the "Park Day" projects there are trash pick-up along roads and streams, rehab of park trails and tree-planting. Volunteers will be provided with necessary equipment. However, they are asked to dress for the weather, bring a water bottle and wear sturdy shoes or boots. In addition, leather work gloves are strongly recommended.

Individuals interested in volunteering should visit the National Parks website at nps.gov.ADNFCR-2712-ID-19670964-ADNFCR
