GPS units may not alert RVers to potential problems

It's a problem many RVers don't even think about until they're faced with it - their GPS system has directed them to a route with a low bridge clearance or some other seemingly unavoidable road obstacle that simply won't accommodate their large vehicle.

Full time RVers Russ and Tina DeMaris write on NewRVer.com that low bridges and weight restricted roadways are a par for the course when it comes to the RV lifestyle. Now RVers and truckers alike are beginning to realize that typical GPS units don't take larger vehicles into account when plotting a course.

"We have a tremendous problem with trucks getting on restricted-access facilities because they followed their generic commercial GPS device," said Todd Westhuis, with the New York State Department of Transportation. "Generally, they don't realize their mistake until they hit the first bridge they come to."

RVers are encouraged to be vigilant about watching for height and weight restriction signs whenever they're on the road.

In addition, the GPS industry has designed software that will help keep RVers and truckers clear from potentially dangerous hazards on the road. Truckers' GPS units are more expensive than generic systems, but they may help individuals who drive larger vehicles steer clear of trouble. ADNFCR-2712-ID-19682812-ADNFCR
