April 2010 RV Product Reviews by

If you’ve just purchased a previously-loved RV; if your present RV is looking a little threadbare inside, or if you just don’t share the RV manufacturer’s taste in interior design, you can now create a customized interior to your individual taste using the resources available at Design Centers in Camping World locations nationwide.

Recognizing the need for aftermarket RV interior design and remodeling services, Camping World has partnered with the professionals at Syntec Industries, an industry leader in RV and marine textile specialties. Syntec offers a broad palette of fabrics to update, upgrade and renew soft furnishings such as bedspreads, pillow shams, throw pillows, neck rolls, window valances and lambrequins, curtains, windshield drapes and upholstery.

Because Syntec specializes in RV and marine furnishings, all the materials and fabrics they offer are specifically manufactured and selected to stand up to the active use they are expected to receive on board a boat or recreational vehicle. All fabrics are flame retardant to comply with motor vehicle safety standards – a feature you won’t find in most fabrics sold for general household use at discount chain stores.

Who needs new RV interior furnishings or upgrades? In today’s uncertain economy, many families have elected to keep an RV they already own (or replace it with another used model) instead of purchasing a new RV. They typically need to replace worn, damaged or outdated components. The cost of renewing an existing RV is significantly less than the cost of purchasing a new model.

Those just getting into the RV lifestyle often purchase a used model to test the waters and see if they truly enjoy RV living before making a major investment. They, too, often need to replace interior elements to restore function and convenience.

Full-time RVers or those who spend a lot of time in living in their RVs also need interior renewal periodically, because their furnishings receive more use and wear than those who use their RV mostly on weekends and for family vacations. Full-timers also are more likely to need more extensive remodeling services, sometimes including custom furniture for office space or a specialty business, such as pet grooming or craft-making.

Easy Coordination
Working with RV design specialist Carlos Garcia at Syntec, Camping World Design Centers offer six fabric families in Premier and Deluxe grades. Fabrics within each family have been selected for color and texture coordination, and include materials suited for drapery, furniture or seating upholstery, bedding, window trim and other soft furnishings.

Premier grade fabrics are generally medium to heavy weight with tight, dense weaves that may take longer and cost more to produce. The texture is incorporated into the fabric to bring interest and variety into the space, suggesting luxury and sophistication.

Bella Premier—subtle patterns, natural earth tones
Serenity Premier Neutral—soft neutrals that blend easily
Moroccan Premier Spice—rich colors and bold patterns

Deluxe grade fabrics are generally light to medium weight with simple, plain weaves which take less time, machinery and labor to produce. Fabrics are soft yet have a fair amount of body, and have a pleasant hand – or “feel” – as a whole. The patterns suggest a soft, harmonious look.

Tranquility Deluxe Neutral—classic patterns and textures
Harbor Haze Deluxe Spa—subtle patterns and textures
Tuscany Deluxe Spice—warm natural tones in subtle or bold patterns

The wide variety of fabrics gives owners of any type RV -- from pop-up and pickup campers to luxury motorcoaches -- options to renew and restore their RV’s interior. Choose fabrics within each family for various components inside your RV, or select favorite fabrics from two or more fabric families.

Once you have made your fabric selections, Design Center experts can help you measure and order your new furnishings. New seating from Flexsteel®, including captain’s chairs, rocker/recliners and sofa beds, can be ordered in the fabrics of choice to not only give your RV a new look inside but also to restore seating and sleeping comfort. Professional installation of new seating, window treatments and other components is available at Camping World SuperCenters.

Flooring Options
The perfect time to replace worn, soiled floor coverings is prior to reinstallation of your new interior furnishings. Syntec offers a selection of vinyl and carpet flooring to complement and complete your interior makeover. Professional floor covering installation is also available at SuperCenters.

Vinyl is available in two grades. Beauflor resilient vinyl flooring looks like real ceramic tile or hardwood and is made to withstand extreme heat and cold without cracking or curling. It’s highly resistant to tears, rips and gouges. Formaldehyde-free, it resists odor-causing mold and mildew along with tough oily stains. The Ultra-Grip® surface offers superior slip resistance even when wet.

Novalis luxury vinyl flooring is also designed to look like real tile and hardwood. The ceramic tile-look flooring comes in 18" x 18" squares with seamless grout. The hardwood-look flooring comes in either 6" x 36" or 4" x 36" planks. All Novalis selections feature a protective coating to resist wear, scuffs, stains and scratches, plus antimicrobial protection to control odors and stains.

Syntec’s carpeting selections include warm neutral tones in both cut pile and continuous loop weave. The selection includes carpeting appropriate for any area of any RV, from the living and dining space to the bedroom and bathroom.

Other Interior Options
Along with the floor coverings and soft furnishing options available from Syntec, Camping World also offers a wide selection of other interior RV accessories and appliances to give your RV new life.

It’s easy to coordinate easy-operating blinds and shades with new window valances and lambrequins. New lighting fixtures improve illumination and accent a new décor, adding the finishing touch to an updated look. New plumbing fixtures, from faucets and showers to toilets, restore function and convenience. An interior makeover is the ideal time to upgrade kitchen appliances like a cooktop, range, microwave or refrigerator, or heating and cooling appliances such as an air conditioner, water heater or furnace. It’s also the perfect time to upgrade or add electronics like a backup system, GPS system, satellite system or new HDTVs.

Whether you elect to do a floor-up makeover, prefer to make improvements in stages, or need custom work to complete your RV renovation, Camping World is ready to work with you to help you make the right selections and get the most benefit from your upgrades. If your RV makeover involves work not available at a SuperCenter, our design experts can help you find and arrange the service you need. Visit any Camping World SuperCenter or Collision Center for information on available installation, replacement and remodeling services.

Interior Design Expertise At Your Service

Carlos Garcia, Syntec Industries’ resident RV and marine design specialist, chose the fabric families available at Camping World RV Design Centers, keeping in mind the look, price and durability of the fabrics so RV owners can “create beauty, harmony, comfort and balance in their RV interiors.”

He also had to keep in mind specific requirements on flammability for materials used in motor vehicles—requirements that don’t apply in the marine industry. All the fabrics chosen for Camping World RV Design Centers have been tested and meet applicable standards.

A graduate of Bauder College-NEC in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, Garcia is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. After many years as a design manager for two major trim manufacturers, he became familiar with the RV and marine industries by designing decorative trims for both. Today, as a textile designer for Syntec Industries, Garcia works directly with fabric manufacturers to bring the right fabrics to RV and marine industry designers for OEM interiors.

“RV and marine interiors are alike in one way,” said Garcia. “Both provide comfort, luxury and style. But they differ in their décor—RV interiors are more formal, traditional and cozy. Marine interiors are more casual, contemporary and relaxed.”

He noted that RV interiors have begun featuring darker colors, sleeker lines, less clutter and crisper colors. In marine interiors, colors have become less fussy, he said, and lines have also become sleeker and cleaner for an uncluttered, relaxed aesthetic. He stays abreast of RV and marine decorating trends by attending RV and boat shows, fabric shows, color seminars and by reading current trade publications.

“In my opinion, RV manufacturers are always on top of the trends in their industry,” says Garcia. “There is no wrong or right on the fabrics or textures used. The key is tapping into the environment that fits their customer and their style.”

His advice for those thinking about redecorating their RV interior?

“First, you should know your personality and lifestyle, then where the fabrics will go and the durability,” he said.

If you have questions about an idea you have for a custom RV interior makeover, Garcia is available to help RV owners create their own distinctive décor.

“If, for any reason, they want to create a new décor different from the program Camping World is offering, said Garcia, “they can communicate with me, letting me know the style and color scheme they want, and I will be more than happy to share my expertise with them.”

Visit any Camping World RV Design Center for more information on your RV interior makeover, where they can put you in touch with Carlos Garcia for expert answers to your interior design questions.
