Thousands of RVers descended upon the Phoenix International Raceway for NASCAR's Subway Fresh Fit 600 last weekend. They all have at least two things in common - they're RVers and they love NASCAR.
Just who they cheer for differs, however. The Arizona Republic reports that fans who camp at the raceway's "RV City" for NASCAR events in April and November proudly display their allegiance with banners, signs and flags.
Number 88, Dale Earnhardt Jr. - or "Junior" - as his fans call him seems to be the fan favorite in Arizona.
"We have five top-driver sellers, and it still is Dale Jr.," Telleann Dong, who is the manager of a store that sells driver action figures, souvenirs and paraphernalia at the raceway told the newspaper. "Then Jeff Gordon, then Jimmie Johnson, then Tony Stewart, and a lot of people like (No. 5) Mark Martin, because he's an older favorite."
Richard and T.J. Wagner say their Jeff Gordon decorations won them some coveted pictures a few years ago.
"Gordon sent his PR guy to the top of the hill and gave me 10 autographed pictures," Richard said.
"The PR guy said he was sent up here, and he said, 'Fans like you, that's why we make it,' " T.J. adds.
