Association urges campgrounds to 'go green'

The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) is urging its members to become more conscious of the environment.

"Some parks have adopted environmentally friendly practices on their own initiative, but many are pledging to adopt green building and recycling programs with encouragement from our association," said ARVC president Linda Profaizer.

The ARVC recognizes green campgrounds by attaching a "Plan It Green" logo to their GoCampingAmerica.com listing. In order to qualify for the listing, parks need to adopt a minimum of three earth-friendly practices such as offering recycling programs for guests, planting trees to offset carbon emissions and avoiding the use of chemicals that are harmful to the environment.

Campgrounds can also now earn a "Green Friendly" icon in the upcoming 2011 addition of Woodall's North American Campground Directory by adhering to at least nine of 18 green friendly criteria.

Some examples of measures parks can adopt to earn the rating are installing motion sensors in bathrooms and other areas, using energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, installing water-saving shower heads, minimizing paper waste by sending confirmations by email and educating guests on eco-friendly tips.

Profaizer said campgrounds are a natural fit for environmentally friendly initiatives, since most parks are located in scenic locations that encourage enjoyment of nature and the outdoors.ADNFCR-2712-ID-19719309-ADNFCR
