Maryland revises its pet policy

April 2010 RV Destinations by

The state of Maryland has become more pet-friendly.

The Maryland Park Service has implemented a revised pet policy that will allow pet owners to visit and enjoy more properties, including six camping areas.

In addition, the policy has removed restrictions on pets in most day-use areas, including Sandy Point, Seneca Creek and Assateague State Parks. All undeveloped areas within State Parks, which have historically been available to pet owners, will remain open to pet access.

As an important component of the new policy, park managers will retain the discretion to prohibit pets from certain facilities within areas where pets are otherwise allowed, such as visitor centers and playgrounds. Service animals will still be allowed in all areas open to their owners.

Current regulations requiring that all pets be leashed and that owners clean up after their pets will remain in effect and will be strictly enforced. State Parks will provide dog waste disposal containers in high-use areas. However, pet owners are being asked to bring their own bags for waste disposal.

The state's pet policy was changed following the consideration of hundreds of public comments regarding the issue. ADNFCR-2712-ID-19719312-ADNFCR
