Getaway idea: Richmond National Battlefield Park

April 2010 RV Destinations by
Print   |   Email
Richmond National Battlefield Park is located 100 miles south of Washington, D.C. in central Virginia.

The park commemorates four major actions of the U.S. Civil War and consists of 13 separate sites with four visitor centers over an 80-mile route.

Visitors are encouraged to start their visit to the park at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works located on the James River in Richmond. The center offers exhibits and audio-visual programs that introduce the story of Richmond during the Civil War and the battlefields and related sites that surround the city.

Throughout the year park staff present a variety of talks, tours, living history demonstrations and special events that commemorate the park's rich heritage.

A full day is urged to complete a driving tour of the battlefields. There are no entrance fees to the park's sites.

This destination comes from the National Park Getaways series, which helps people find new places to reconnect with nature, history, family and friends.

Each Wednesday, the National Park Service posts a new getaway idea on its website, nps.gov/getaways. There's a new park idea every week and most of the activities listed are free, so they're good, budget-friendly vacation options.
