Tents needed to help quake victims in Haiti

In just a few weeks, hurricane season will get underway in Haiti and hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by January's 7.0 magnitude earthquake will be dealing with possible flooding, mudslides and disease due to a lack of shelter during the rain.

Actresses Eva Longoria Parker, Amber Valletta and Maria Bello have teamed up to urge Americans to help with a new Haiti charity campaign that will deliver waterproof tents to those who need them.

The "Raise the Roof" campaign allows individuals to go online and buy a tent, donate money to be used towards the purchase of a tent or send their own waterproof tent to help the homeless in Haiti.

"With rainy season just two weeks away, more than a million Haitian people are still displaced as a result of the earthquake and are living in tent cities in shelters made of makeshift tarps and cotton bed sheets," the actresses wrote in an appeal to the public. "Two nights ago at the Petionville Displacement Camp in Port-au-Prince, the rains were so hard that the entire village was a foot thick in mud by the next morning."

Outdoor enthusiasts who are upgrading their own tents for the camping season may consider sending their old ones to the charity.
