Eating fresh food on the road

April 2010 RV Tips and Advice by

Veteran camping and RV enthusiasts often have the art of planning their on-the-road meals down to a science. They know what to stock up on in order to ensure they'll have an adequate supply of fresh, healthy food.

For those new to the lifestyle, and even some long-time RVers, packing food and planning meals for a trip can often be a daunting task. But it doesn't have to be, according to RV expert Bob Difley, who recently offered some tips and suggestions on RV.net.

The key is to stock up on fresh items that have some staying power and to avoid having to travel far distances on the road searching for your favorite items, says Difley.

When it comes to vegetables, things like radishes, onions, cucumbers and peppers are all good options for salads. Keeping them refrigerated will extend their freshness even longer, too. Root vegetables like potatoes, carrots and turnips will also last if they're kept in a cool, dry place.

When it comes to fruit, items like apples and oranges generally last longer than others. Purchasing fruits at various stages of ripeness can also extend your supply during the trip.

Frozen vegetables and fruits are a good option for many. Buying local, in-season items on the road will help you save money and ensure you're eating fresh as well.ADNFCR-2712-ID-19735060-ADNFCR
