RV fire safety tips

May 2010 RV Tips and Advice by

An RV fire can not only potentially cause a loss of life and property, but it may spark a wildfire that could affect many people. Protecting against fires in an RV, motorhome or camper is imperative and according to Woodall's, there are a few things owners can do to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Like a brick-and-mortar home, RVs need to be equipped with working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Batteries should be changed frequently and devices should be tested to ensure they're working properly.

Woodall's also suggests RVers have a 5-pound ABC rated fire extinguisher near each exit as well as an unlocked outside compartment. Extinguishers should also be regularly checked to ensure they're in working order. This can be done by making sure the needle on the unit is its green area.

Making sure everyone travelling in the RV knows how to operate all of the doors and emergency exits is important as well. In addition, owners should practice their evacuation plan and designate a safe meeting place in case of an emergency.

Keeping your vehicle well-maintained is also important for fire and general safety on the road.
