'Glamping' catches on in California

"Glamping" is a term that combines glamour with camping. Basically it sums up the experience of camping and enjoying the great outdoors, without any of the "roughing it" many have come to know and love.

Glamping is a relatively new term but one that many RVers have enjoyed for years in their luxury motorhomes outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, appliances, furnishings and finishes. Campgrounds and resorts around the country and the world are jumping on the glamping bandwagon as well with simple things like Wi-Fi access, luxury pool areas and game rooms as well as other amenities that could compete with any non-RV or camping resort.

California's Contra Costa Times newspaper recently profiled several of the state's campgrounds that offer glamping at its best.

Just north of Santa Barbara, El Capitan Canyon offers fully appointed cedar cabins and raised canvas safari tents with willow beds and linens. The campground also has a restaurant and offers guests free Saturday night concerts.

Several California KOA locations also offer luxurious getaways. They include locations in Petaluma, Manhattan Beach and Santa Cruz.

In San Diego county, the Sacred Rocks Reserve hosts workshops in writing, poetry, photography and crafts, and holds occasional geocaching events. There's also a special meditation area.

The Emerald Desert RV park in Palm Springs has an indoor/outdoor spa, driving range, putting green and tennis courts. They also rent luxury two-bedroom condos.
