Ideas for healthy, portable snacks

September 2010 RV Tips and Advice by

As the prevalence of U.S. adults who are considered obese continues to rise, many individuals are becoming more conscious of eating healthy. For RVers and other outdoor enthusiasts who are worried about nutrition on-the-go, snacks offer a way to battle this obesity epidemic.

"Individuals who are attempting to diet or eat healthy in order to maintain a healthy weight often have a really difficult time avoiding unhealthy snack foods while on the road," said Gerard Pedata, owner of Pedata RV Center in Phoenix, Arizona. "Junk food and road trip are synonymous in the minds of many. But to lead a healthy RVing lifestyle that has to change."

Nutrition experts say that the key to choosing snacks that will keep you full and energized is to pick things that combine complex carbohydrates with protein and a little fat. Ideas include a handful of nuts with a piece of cheese, fruit, or beef jerky, as well as a half a sandwich on whole grain bread or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins.

Other convenient, portable snacks are peanut butter crackers, carrot sticks, yogurt, fruit, trail mix, cheese cubes or sticks and hard boiled eggs.

Keeping hydrated by drinking a lot of water is also a good way to stay full and satisfied longer.
