NASCAR drivers remember 9/11

September 2010 NASCAR News by

Like many Americans, fans and drivers at NASCAR events at Richmond International Speedway remembered the events of September 11, 2001 on the nine-year anniversary of the attacks.

Every fan who attended the race received an American flag to wave during pre-race ceremonies. In addition, there was a special military flyover to honor those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks, according to Examiner.com.

Some drivers also spoke about the significance of the day.
The Boston Globe reports that driver Kyle Busch said, "As far as it being a day of remembrance that's highly important. And, what all the people in New York City went through that day obviously a huge tragedy in the history of the United States and in the world really. If you look at it, it was a big impact all around and still is to today."

Driver Jeff Gordon, who drove the National Guard Military Intelligence Chevrolet to a 12th place finish in Richmond, called it an honor to represent the military on the anniversary of 9/11.

"It's a way for us to really honor those that were lost and all those that have sacrificed since then for the peace and the freedom that we have," Gordon said.
