Products offer safer travel for people and their pets

A recent survey conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA) found that although many people travel in their cars, trucks, SUVs and RVs with their pets, very few actually restrain their animals properly.

The survey found that only 17 percent of people surveyed said they use a pet restraint system when driving with their dogs.

Experts suggest that using a pet restraint system can help to protect drivers, passengers and the animals in the car in the event of an accident. .

"An unrestrained 10-pound dog in a crash at 50 mph will exert roughly 500 pounds of pressure, while an unrestrained 80-pound dog in a crash at only 30 mph will exert 2,400 pounds of pressure," said AAA's Jennifer Huebner-Davidson. "Imagine the devastation that can cause to your pet and anyone in the vehicle in its path."

There are many pet restraint products available, for dogs of all sizes.

The pet barrier fits most SUVs, vans and wagons. It is easy to install and creates a barrier between your vehicle's cargo area and the passenger area to keep pets separate.

The backseat car barrier is similar, but can be used in vehicles without a separate cargo area, such as sedans.

Other products like the Tru-Fit Smart Harness and the Auto Zip Line allow pet owners to buckle their animals in, similar to a seat belt.
