Program allows RVers to stay for free at farms and wineries

Camping overnight for free no longer means parking your RV in a Walmart parking lot, at a casino, a truck stop or in another remote location.

RV.net reports that there's a new membership program called Harvest Hosts that allows RVers to stay overnight at farms, orchards and wineries across the nation for free.

The program, which is in its first year, was modeled after a similar one in Europe. There are currently 219 host locations across the country, in all of the lower 48 states. Harvest Hosts reports that more farms, wineries and orchards are being added every day as well. Locations in Canada will be added starting in 2011.

RVers pay a yearly membership fee of $20 to be eligible for dry camping in their self-contained vehicle (motorhome, camper, fifth-wheel, travel trailer, etc.) at participating farms.

Members receive online access to the downloadable host directory that contains locations, contact information, hours, GPS coordinates and activities. They also receive a membership card, a vehicle ID badge and access to the members-only pages on the website.

Although campers are not required to pay individual hosts, they are asked to follow a basic code of conduct for the duration of their stay.

Individuals interested in learning more can visit the website at HarvestHosts.com for more information.
