Before you buy that RV?

Buying an RV is a major investment, after all it's your home away from home and must be right for you. There are few things to think about before buying to make sure you make the right choice.

First of all, set your budget and do your homework! HGTV.com suggests figuring out what type of RV is best for you before you start shopping. If you're planning to travel cross-country a motorized RV will most likely be best, while if you'll most likely be taking shorter trips, a towable RV will work fine. Deciding whether you should buy new or used is important as well.

There are many websites to research RVs and RV enthusiasts are always willing to offer their experience with certain brands and dealers. One of the most popular online resources is the forum at RVtravel.com. This will allow you to connect with others and ask questions before you buy.
Attending RV shows, common in the spring and fall, can also be helpful in figuring out what's right for you.

If you've never used an RV, research what you're getting into beforehand too. The Better Business Bureau sells a DVD called "Buying a Recreational Vehicle" that can be very helpful. And, the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association offers a free DVD about the RV lifestyle.

Once you've made the decision to buy, rent an RV similar to the one you'd like to purchase for a weekend trip. This will help you to realize if you're really getting everything you want.
