Camping World associates were among those collecting and donating supplies and funds for a project to rebuild an orphanage destroyed by the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010 in Port au Prince, Haiti.
Camping World web developer Matt Forbis and his wife Mandy were among 21 volunteers from Kentucky and nine from Florida who worked with the Orphan’s Heart non-profit organization on construction of a new orphanage in Bon Repos, Haiti. Construction began January 7 with 11 more teams scheduled to continue work on the new orphanage through June.
Projects during the week-long trip included building a new compound wall, digging a septic system, and forming a foundation for the building. The new orphanage will be known as “Mango Tree Children’s Home” and will be overseen by the non-profit organization Children First: Love and Hope once it is completed.
“Children First: Love and Hope is a non-profit organization based out of Frankfort, Kentucky,” said Forbis. “They provide for the children’s basic physical and educational needs.”
Forbis said Children First accepts monthly sponsorship of a child for $40 and also one-time gifts. All money donated goes to the children’s needs, he said. Currently, over 30 Haitian orphans are living in three 12' x 12' sheds with wooden beds and no toilet facilities. These children will reside in the new orphanage once it is completed.
Among the supplies collected and delivered to the orphanage were vitamins, Tylenol®, Band-Aids®, clothing, flip-flops, snacks, school supplies and a toy for each child. Camping World also donated shirts for the children.
