Geocaching: High-tech fun for RVers

November 2009 RV Industry and Lifestyle by

Are you an RVer who loves gadgets and everything high-tech? There's a new sport that may be perfect for your next RV adventure: geocaching.

Geocaching is becoming very common among outdoor-lovers and RV enthusiasts alike. Using a handheld GPS unit, players program a mystery position into the unit and set off on an adventure to uncover the treasure left by a fellow geocacher. It's a virtual treasure hunt, essentially.

The only cost involved is the GPS unit, which usually runs around $100. There are many geocaching websites and the so-called treasures can be hidden anywhere from a hollowed out tree stump in the middle of a state park to a busy street corner in a large city.

What kinds of treasures can you expect? Overall the treasures usually aren't anything valuable. They range from hand-written poems and cds to energy bars and books. It's not about the treasure for most geocachers, it's about the journey they took to get there. Keep in mind that you're supposed to leave something for the next discoverer when you take something as well.

Whether it's in your own hometown or somewhere far away, geocaching can provide a high-tech adventure for travelers looking for something different.
