Getaway idea: Homestead National Monument of America

May 2010 RV Destinations by
Print   |   Email
Located in Southeast Nebraska, Homestead National Monument of America commemorates the Homestead Act of 1862 and the far-reaching effects it had upon the landscape and people.

The Homestead Act was one of the most significant and enduring events in the westward expansion of the United States. By granting 160 acres of free land to claimants, it allowed nearly any man or woman a "fair chance."

Individuals visiting the monument have a wide variety of activities to choose from. A visit to the Heritage Center or Education Center brings the epic homestead story to life for visitors of all ages and demonstrates the true scope and importance of the Homestead Act.

Visitors can also explore the grounds with a cell phone audio tour of the monument.

The 244-acre monument is home to the nation's second oldest restored tallgrass prairie and abounds with plant and animal life rarely seen all in one place. Many scenic views can be seen while walking the extensive trail system as well.

Admission to and parking for the monument are free.

This destination comes from the National Park Getaways series, which helps people find new places to reconnect with nature, history, family and friends.
