Hurricane tips for RVers

June 1st marked the beginning of hurricane season. Weather experts say this year may be a very active season due to the weather phenomenon known as El Nino and warmer waters in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Hurricanes can be extremely dangerous, especially for those in RVs and other less substantial dwellings. The Edmonton Journal newspaper recently published some tips for RVers to stay out of harm's way this hurricane season.

RVers are encouraged to keep updated on weather forecasts, even when they're away from home, and especially during hurricane season and if they're traveling in the southeast U.S., Atlantic coastal states, or the Gulf of Mexico.

If a hurricane is headed your way, leave the area as soon as possible. If you wait too long, the news provider says that you may hit major traffic and may not make it to safety before the heavy rains and winds begin.

RVers should have adequate emergency supplies including water, canned foods, flashlights, batteries, a radio and first aid items, especially during hurricane season.

If you get caught in or near a hurricane, secure your vehicle, move it as far away from trees as possible and try to position it with its nose into the wind or along the side of a building that can shield it from high winds.
