From the beginning in the mid-1990’s, CURT design choices have included closing the ends of the hitch’s main body, opening the rear of the receiver tube and finishing the hitch with a high-gloss powder coat finish. Closing the ends of the main body of the hitch ensures the vehicle owner that corrosion-producing elements cannot enter the main body where rust can and often does ruin a hitch from the inside out. The open receiver tube allows the owner to easily clear any accumulated debris by simply inserting the ball mount, weight distribution hitch shank, bike rack, cargo carrier or other hitch-mounted accessory.

Finishing the hitch with the distinctive CURT high gloss powder coat finish was an early choice and one that presented CURT with a challenge. The application of a high gloss black finish makes a very attractive vehicle accessory. However, it can also magnify any flaw left on the surface of the steel. The challenge is to remove every flaw before the powder is applied. CURT assures a flawless finish by the use of both mechanical and chemical preparation processes prior to the application of the finish. The result is a rich, smooth, durable finish without equal in the hitch industry.

CURT also offers many hitches and accessories in their Custom Color program, offering as many at 10 unique colors on select applications. The hitches included in this program are listed in the CURT hitch catalog at your local Camping World store. Also included in the Custom Color program are common accessories such as ball mounts, hitch covers, hitch ball covers and bike racks.

Image and strength are designed into each CURT hitch. The CURT Engineering Team create, fit and test each hitch design before it is released to production and offered for sale. Extensive testing includes Finite Element Analysis (FEA), cycle testing and independent testing by industry experts. FEA testing is a very reliable method of design validation commonly used by engineers, including those in the aeronautics industry. Cycle testing simulates a lifetime of real-world use of a hitch and assures lasting performance. All testing is done to SAE J684 (V-5) standards for automotive-type trailer couplings, hitches and safety chains to give you peace of mind.

CURT also manufactures wiring harnesses to connect the lights of your trailer to the lighting system on your car or truck. CURT SMT Series™ T-Connectors are 100% circuit-protected. Circuit protection is an important insurance policy for the vehicle owner. When a trailer experiences any sort of trouble that creates excess demand through the circuit of the T-connector, a non-circuit-protected unit can overheat badly enough to melt the entire housing of the unit. There have been cases where such an overheating condition has actually caused a vehicle fire.

The circuit protection feature built into every CURT SMT Series™ T-connector protects your vehicle from such a condition the same way your home’s circuit breakers protect your house. If a problem occurs, the circuit is temporarily shut off. In a CURT SMT Series™ T-connector, the circuit breaker resets automatically when the vehicle is re-started. If a problem happens again you are advised to have the trailer circuit inspected to track the source of the problem.
