Medical tourism south of the border

Full-time RVer and blogger Jim Twamley recently updated a series he's been working on for several years about saving money on healthcare by travelling to Mexico.

He says thousands of RVers flock to certain Mexican towns each winter to find less expensive prescription eye glasses, hearing aids, medication and dental work.

Twamley recently accompanied some friends on a trip to Los Algodones, Mexico, which is located just south of Yuma, Arizona. He points out that a complete eye exam costs $10 and is done by a university-trained optometrist. In addition, many dentists in Mexico undergo the same university training and lab work as dentists in the U.S. and Canada.

Some Mexican border towns, like Los Algodones, that cater to individuals seeking deals on medical exams, products and treatments are heavily patrolled by police and Mexican federal law enforcement and are considered safe. Twamley advises against travel to towns that are not well-known as safe for medical tourists.

Los Algodones also recently completed work on a covered sidewalk with benches and a restroom facility to cater to visitors waiting to leave the country.
