Oregon launches beginners camping program

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has launched a program aimed at helping new campers learn the ropes.

The "Let's Go Camping" program consists of overnight camping excursions at locations throughout the state. Typical activities will include ranger-led demonstrations on camping basics, group nature hikes and information on Dutch oven cooking and fire safety.

Extra gear will be available for individuals who don't have all of the essentials for the campout as well.

Each event costs $20 per family.

The program kicks off the weekend of June 5 at Willamette Mission State Park and continues throughout the summer at different state park locations throughout the state.

Beginning backpackers can also take advantage of two two-night "Let's Go Backpacking" excursions as well.

Individuals interested in learning more or registering for an overnight campout should visit the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department website at OregonStateParks.org or call Reservations Northwest at 1-888-953-7677.

The parks department is also looking for volunteers to help with the program. Volunteers who give their time and expertise will be awarded with free camping. Interested individuals should visit the website and click on the "volunteer information contact."
