Grand Canyon North Rim closing for the season

There's an important seasonal road closure RVers, campers and tourists need to know about. According to the Associated Press, the Arizona Department of Transportation will close State Route 67, the roadway leading to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in early December. It will remain closed until May.

Most North Rim facilities closed on October 15, but scenic roadways and overlooks, as well as gas stations, camping and gift and book stores have remained open in order to provide basic services until the road closes for the season. The annual closure is due to high elevation and heavy snowfalls each winter, according to ArizonaGuide.com.

The North Rim campground will still be available for winter camping and is accessible by inner canyon trails from the South Rim or by cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The South Rim and inner canyon will remain open all year.

The Grand Canyon is Arizona's most popular tourist attraction and landmark. Stretching 277 miles long and more than a mile deep, camping, hiking, rafting and tours are the most popular Grand Canyon activities.
