Keeping your RV secure on the road

Although crime isn't common in RV parks, it's important to take steps to keep you, your loved ones and your investment safe and secure while travelling.

The KOA website suggests getting into the habit of locking your vehicle when you're going out. This includes securing exterior storage compartments and windows as well as putting any outdoor furniture, accessories and sports gear away.

Take advantage of the sense of community that's common in RV parks everywhere. Get to know your neighbors and agree to look out for each other and each other's belongings.

If you prefer more privacy, consider security upgrades for your RV. Security alarm systems and motion-sensitive lights can help to avoid a potential break in.

A lot of RVs also have safes. Even those that don't come with built-in safes can be outfitted with one pretty inexpensively. It's an easy way to store valuables without worrying about theft.

Choose your RV park carefully too. Ask about what security measures they have in place, whether or not they have security patrols and if the park is well-lit. Remember that even when you feel "at home" you need to be conscious of your surroundings and alert to the potential for danger.
