Spring is almost here—is your RV ready for the first trip of the season? Some preseason preparation will help make sure your first RV adventure of the year goes smoothly.
Tire Safety
Make sure your tires are road-ready. Follow the manufacturer’s specifications for correct inflation pressure. Check tread depth to determine that there is at least 1/32” of tread left on the tire. Check sidewalls for cracks or cuts. Torque lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications. Don’t forget to check the spare as well as all tires on the ground.
Annual Services
Have a certified technician perform essential annual services, including a complete inspection of the propane system and appliances. Get the battery system checked; replace dead batteries; check electrolyte levels and top up as needed. Have your generator serviced with an oil and filter change; get it tuned up to ensure that the output is within acceptable parameters. Have your trailer’s wheel bearings repacked and brake system checked for proper operation.
Regular cleaning and maintenance of your roof helps prevent leaks and water damage. Inspect your roof for overall surface condition and places where repairs may be needed. Check all seals, seams, vents, skylights, antennas and other rooftop accessories, along with the seals at corners and edges where the walls attach. Now is the time to perform cleaning and sealing on rubber roofs and cleaning and re-coating of fiberglass or aluminum roof surfaces.
Chassis Checks
Don’t forget to check out your motorhome or tow vehicle for needed service. Check engine oil, coolant, power steering, brake and transmission fluid levels, replacing or topping off as needed. Top up the windshield washer reservoir; inspect windshield wipers and replace if they show sun or ice damage.
Emergency Alarms
Just like in your home, be sure to regularly check the batteries and operation of your smoke, carbon monoxide and propane detectors. Make sure your fire extinguisher is fully charged and ready to use in an emergency.
