Avoiding hard water damage in your RV
Hard water, found in many areas of the U.S., can mean big problems for the plumbing system of an RV as minerals deposit and build up inside of pipes and can even eat through pipe fittings.
RVWaterSolutions.com suggests using a portable RV water softener to protect your RV. These devices cost anywhere from $200 or more, but ensure against the harmful mineral deposits associated with hard water.
RV enthusiasts and writers for RVTechTips.com, Russ and Tina DeMaris, suggest trying a more inexpensive option first. They say many RVers use a yearly vinegar treatment in their water system to flush hard water mineral deposits out.
You'll need about 4 gallons of white vinegar and 4 gallons of fresh water for the treatment. They say once the solution is in your fresh water holding tank, you should drive around a bit to swish it around. Then, run the acidic solution through all of the water lines and let it sit overnight. The next day, drain the water tank, refill it with fresh water and run all fixtures until the vinegar is out.
