A 1999 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 34’ Class A motorhome belonging to Ernest and Cheryl Vosges of Orlando, Florida has a whole new look inside following completion of an RV Makeover they won in the Camping World RV Makeover Contest last fall. The makeover, valued at $10,000, was done at the Camping World SuperCenter in Kissimmee, Florida.
Kelly Young, Collision Center Manager at the Kissimmee SuperCenter, oversaw the project and helped pick out flooring and upholstery materials used in the makeover. Young met regularly with Mr. Vosges and personally followed the job from start to finish to make sure the final product was just what the Vosges wanted. Dave Vacanti, Service Technician at the Kissimmee store, performed the makeover work, installing the furniture, flooring, shades, lighting and carpet. Custom woodwork was done by Robert Berkebile of Leesburg, Florida at his cabinetry shop, and was installed by his son Tom Berkebile, Service Technician at the Kissimmee SuperCenter. Upholstery work was done by S & M Upholstery in Kissimmee. Service Writer Jeremy Croston did the initial walk-through with the Vosges to note the upgrades they wanted.
The Vosges, who are retired, enjoy camping with their daughter and granddaughter on weekends at nearby Port Canaveral, where they stay at Jetty Park, only a few feet away from the Atlantic Ocean. They also use the coach to visit the Florida Keys, towing a 2008 Saturn. Their entry was one of over 500 received in the makeover contest. Entrants submitted a photo and a short essay on why they thought their RV deserved a makeover. The Vosges said in their essay that they saw the makeover pictures in the June 2009 issue of RV View and realized that this type of upgrade was what they wanted for their motorhome, which they have owned for about three years.
The Vosges’ coach, while still in good condition, had a dated, worn interior, from the window treatments and lighting to upholstery and floor coverings. So after removing the old carpets, window treatments, lighting and other outdated elements, the Vacationer’s interior facelift began.
Worn, stained carpets in the living and kitchen areas were removed and replaced with vinyl and laminate flooring, immediately giving the coach a warm, contemporary look. The old sofa bed was replaced with a Flexsteel Deluxe Easy Bed Sofa in Toffee, and the old driver and passenger seats were replaced with Flexsteel Captain’s Chairs in Toffee to match the new Easy Bed Sofa. The carpet in the driver/passenger/engine cover area was also replaced, and a new windshield drape was installed. Custom cabinetry was added to the dash to house a TV, and a new AM/FM/CD/DVD audiovisual system with iPod® connection and backup camera monitor capability was added.
Dinette seat cushions and a chair near the entrance door were reupholstered in fabrics matching the window treatments in the living and dining areas. The old swing-down dinette table was replaced with a new Pedestal Table in a warm Walnut finish that nicely complements the warm tones of the new fabric upholstery. The table is mounted on a smooth-operating, air-powered, three-stage adjustable pedestal in anodized aluminum that adjusts to counter height, dining height or bed height with just a touch.
The old mini blinds, valances and lambrequins were removed from the windows, and new United Shade Day/Night Shades in Buff Tan were installed, nicely coordinating with the new upholstery. The valances and lambrequins, meanwhile, were recovered in the same fabrics used on the dinette seats and living room chair before being reinstalled. Light fixtures were updated with new Gustafson satin nickel wall sconces, ceiling lights and low profile lights. Three throw pillows in the same fabrics as the window treatments were made to accent the new sofa bed and complete the new look of the RV’s living room.
With all the new upgrades, the Vacationer is now ready for a tropical getaway. How do the Vosges like the end result of their makeover?
Mr. Vosges said they recently used the renovated coach for a birthday party for his granddaughter, followed by a trip to Disney World. He said they are also looking forward to taking the RV down to Ft. Lauderdale to visit family.
