KOA unveils first 'green' lodge
Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has announced that the Herkimer Diamond location has become the worlds first campground with a 100 percent off-the-power-grid, solar powered camping lodge.
The KOA Solar 1 Lodge uses solar panels on its roof to harness energy as well as a propane backup generator that "kicks on" to recharge power batteries during cloudy weather. These features allow the lodge to run completely independent of outside energy sources.
"The new lodge lets people have the experience, and learn about all of the green technologies," said Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat, owner of the Herkimer Diamond KOA and the 2010 KOA Franchisee of the Year.
Other "green" technology and products being used at the lodge include a recycled metal roof, pulverized glass landscaping, bed pillows made from fiberfill from recycled plastic bottles, deck furniture fabricated from recycled plastic milk jugs, and an organic garden that allows guests to harvest their own vegetables during their stay.
The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) recently began urging its members to become more conscious of the environment.
Travelers looking for environmentally friendly campgrounds can look for ARVC's "Plan It Green" logo on GoCampingAmerica.com listings. The 2011 addition of Woodall's North American Campground Directory will also designate "green" locations with a "Green Friendly" icon as well.
