Gulf oil spill affecting campground business
Some businesses that depend on tourism are feeling the effects of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
WLOX-TV in Southern Mississippi reports that some hotels had cancelled reservations because of the spill, but that the losses were mitigated by contractors staying while helping with the clean-up.
Campgrounds, like Biloxi's Cajun RV park, have also been affected by the spill.
The park's manager, Jonathan Mikovich, told the news provider that business for the month is down 35 percent so far.
"I would say most of the people are mentioning it, but overall I think are just looking for another destination to go totally because they don't want to have it impact their only week off of vacation they get," he said.
Several class action lawsuits stemming from the spill involving hundreds of clients have already been filed in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Meanwhile, BP has promised that every legitimate claim of financial loss will be paid.
Mikovich says he has not yet ruled out a lawsuit.
"If revenue is being off as much as we are thinking it's going to be, we could absolutely do that," he told WLOX-TV.
