Tips for camping with man's best friend

For many people, pets are part of the family. In fact, Campground.com reports that 30 million Americans each year take their pets with them while camping. A little bit of planning ahead can help ensure your next camping trip will be a good one for both you and your dog.

Before you leave, make sure your animal is healthy and their vaccinations are up to date. You'll need proof that your dog's been vaccinated to stay at some campgrounds. And if your pet needs any medications, you'll need to make sure you have an adequate supply for your trip.

Losing a dog while travelling can turn a vacation into a nightmare. Bring a picture of your pet with you just in case he or she wanders off. Keeping your dog leashed at all times is important as is keeping a collar with identification on him or her. It's a good idea to include your cell phone number so anyone who finds your pet can get in touch with you immediately. In addition, some pet owners opt for having their dogs implanted with a microchip to make identifying them easier in case they're lost.

Whenever possible, plan your trip out beforehand and call ahead to confirm campsites' pet policies. TripsWithPets.com is just one of many that offers an online directory of pet-friendly accomodations and campgrounds.

Make sure to pack adequate food, water and other supplies for your dog. Bring a first aid kit for your pet as well. Your vet will be able to tell you what you'll need, based on your pet's history.

Most importantly, make your dog a part of the vacation. Take him or her with you as much as possible and plan pet-friendly outings and excursions like hikes and nature walks.

Remember that there are some people who don't like dogs so respect their views. And, always clean up after your dog!
