TravelNet by Winegard®: Fast, Reliable, Two-Way Wireless Internet

January 2009 RV Product Reviews by
Print   |   Email

Winegard proudly introduces their new TravelNet wireless internet system giving you the ability to stay connected with family and friends, no matter where your travels take you. Anytime, all-the-time internet access provides fast and reliable two-way wireless internet service, allowing you the ability to send and receive emails and pictures, surf the web for news or weather, shop online, or do business, all right from the comfort of your RV. The TravelNet internet system works while parked or traveling down the road as well as inside or up to 50 yards outside the RV.

How it works…

The TravelNet system uses two small roof-mounted high gain antennas to send and receive the cellular signal. These small antennas stand only 2.5” high, making them barely noticeable from the ground, and require minimal roof space – a major advantage to RVers.

Through low-loss cabling, the signal is carried to a cellular router. The cellular router is connected to a wi-fi router, which allows information to be sent and received wirelessly to a computer or laptop. The compact size of the cellular and wi-fi routers allow them to be placed anywhere within the RV as long as they are near an outlet. The only thing needed in addition to the TravelNet internet system is a computer/laptop (sold separately).

Choose from 2 TravelNet Options…
There are two different types of TravelNet products to choose from, both of which are certified by the FCC.

The internet only system is a two-way, send and receive system that allows you the ability to check emails, share pictures with friends and family, shop online, surf the web for news and weather, do business or whatever else you desire. Provider options include Sprint® and Verizon®. Be sure to check with your cellular provider for coverage areas.

The internet and phone combination system delivers all the same great internet capabilities offered with the internet only system plus it also provides a dedicated ‘RV Phone’ that mimics a home phone with one exception – you can make or receive calls while traveling down the road!

Simply add another number to your existing cell phone package as a family plan for minimal cost and set up a wireless phone within the RV. Now you will enjoy the ability to have up to 5 extensions throughout the RV, better speaker phone compared to cell phones and larger number keys which makes placing calls much easier. You’ll also have FREE nights and weekends for long distance calls (rates vary by provider and package). Provider options include AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Be sure to check with your cellular provider for coverage areas.

Both TravelNet options come with 2 high gain antennas for improved connection and speeds. Both systems also come with a wi-fi router to provide wireless hot spot capabilities, supporting multiple laptops from anywhere within 50 yards.

Approved TravelNet cellular providers (AT&T, Verizon and Sprint) all have existing data networks setup for internet that are used on such devices as Blackberry, iPhone, and other “smart” phones. This existing cell phone data coverage can also be used to deliver internet to the RV.

TravelNet Advantages

Unlike satellite internet systems, the TravelNet system requires minimal roof space and does not require a large antenna installation. The two small antennas mounted on the roof of the RV are only 2 ½ inches tall. Another TravelNet advantage over satellite internet systems is that with the TravelNet system you are always connected. Whether parked in a camp ground or cruising down the highway, with the TravelNet system you always have access to the internet.

TravelNet systems are also fully portable, unlike satellite internet systems. In addition to the roof-mounted antennas, each TravelNet system comes with two small portable antennas that screw onto the cellular router, offering you the opportunity to enjoy your wireless internet wherever you go – not just in your RV! Use it at home, in the car, in your cabin or vacation home, hotel room, work, a friends house… wherever you want!

TravelNet systems outperform Air Cards with higher connectivity rates of 90% compared to 60 – 65%. TravelNet systems also have a great advantage over other cellular products because of the two roof-top antennas. Antennas outside the RV allow for a better connection with higher speeds (broadband speeds will vary based on coverage and provider), more range and better consistency. Plus, having two antennas, as opposed to one, provides a higher percentage of connection time while traveling down the road.
