Out of the box this rake could not be opened. Two people tried to open it but it was stuck. Had to use a hammer to try to force it open. It looked and worked fine then but on closing I was unable to open it again without really beating it with a hammer. Spend a few extra bucks and get a quality item at your local gardening shop
