More about this water heater:
Congratulations, you're preparing to connect the world's easiest way to heat water on the go. Before we start, let's take a look at what comes with the heater. Included is a CSA listed regulator for use on a standard propane tank, on/off shower head and hose, garden hose adapter, and instruction manual, heat shield, and, of course, the water heater itself. You will need to provide two D cell batteries for ignition. Connecting your Eccotemp L5 portable water heater is not difficult, and should be completed in less than 15 minutes.
Let's take a look at the installation from start to finish. Look first at the connections. We have a gas input. A compression fitting for attachment of the hose is already attached. The water input, water output. Teflon tape should always be used on water connections to ensure a tight seal. A small roll is included in the hardware package with the heater. Next you will attached the shower hose to the output connection in the middle of the bottom. We will find a convenient location to hang the water heater. Weighing only about 12 pounds, the L5 can be hung virtually anywhere.
Next we will attach the propane hose to the water heater and to the propane tank. Never over-tighten the gas connections, as this can cause damage to the water heater and leaking of gas. Always check for gas leaks before operation. Soapy water gives a good way of detecting any gas leaks. Now we will attach the garden hose adapter and the garden hose. Be sure that the adapter has the rubber washers in it to assure a water-tight fit. The on/off switch on the bottom of the heater should be turned into the on position. Turn on your shower head and, within seconds, you will have all the hot water you need.
Shower temperature is adjusted by using the water and gas regulator knobs on the front of the heater. For higher temperatures, turn the gas knob towards the larger marks and the water adjustment knob to the smaller marks. Conversely, for lower temperatures, the gas knob should be to the smaller marks, and the water knob to the larger marks. The nice thing about Eccotemp water heaters is they provide convenient and portable hot water. Warm showers at camp, cottage, washing horses, dogs, RVs, arenas. Anywhere you need hot water. Eccotemp, hot water where and when needed. Heating water for the world.
Wind and rain can blow out or drown the burner. (2)

After installation, I kept getting a vague gas smell from around the tank. I called Ecco and left a message but they NEVER returne...d my call. Not impressed with their customer service. I would give this unit another star if they had at least returned my call. :(
I use this when at the beach, it's great for washing off
sand and such, and keeps the mess outside the RV. Hang it
just about a...nywhere - on a post, a fence, even the ladder of
the RV. I also use it at home for giving one of our horses
a warm bath, although the nozzle hose could be longer for
that. As received, the nozzle hose did not screw onto the
heater - the threads were different. I called the service
number, they explained the problem (packaging error at the
factory) and they shipped me a new nozzle and hose that same
day. Longer hose and better quality than the original.
Replaced the water heater in my motorhome with this one!

This water heater is amazing. I don't have to wait 30 minutes for my regular water heater in my motorhome to heat up anymore. Just... turn the knob & get hot water instantly. It just works great, with one main exception. The chimney /vent cover is poorly designed. I had to make a better one to keep the rain out. If it gets wet inside the unit, you will have to let it dry thoroughly before you can use it. I'd buy another one, if I had a place to put it. It even works with a pump so you can use it with your onboard freshwater tank. It took 2 months to empty a 20lb. propane tank with 2 people showering everyday + doing dishes & washing hands. I was lucky to get a month out of a 20lb tank with my old water heater. It's one of the best investments I've ever made. It will save you money & you won't run out of hot water. The same company makes a larger unit to use on a house. You will not be disappointed.
I've been using my EccoTemp portable water heater in my outdoor shower at my cabin going on four years now. It has been one of th...e best investments I've ever made. I cannot rave enough about the satisfaction I've had with using this appliance. The one exciting benefit is that I've only had to exchange the propane tank once during the time I've owned it and I shower almost daily.I use it exclusively during the warmer seasons and store it indoors for the winter. One regret is that EccoTemp apparently does not make a vented unit for use indoors; however there is another manufacturer that does, and it is nearly identical. Plans are to buy one of theirs and use it as my whole house water heater, replacing the 6 gallon electric unit I have now. The price of the Ecco Temp is AWESOME - a great value! It makes a nice (unusual) gift for someone who seems to have everything. Take it from me, you will not be disappointed with this water heater.
This is by far one of the best investments I've ever made. I can't say enough about how completely satisfied I am with the perfor...mance, quality, and efficiency of this water heater. What drew me to this product in the first place was the
unbelievable low price, compared to other heaters listed for hundreds more. Very light-weight. Very portable. Very simple to get it up and running. I have it hanging behind my cabin in a small, oudoor shower stall. I've lost count of the number of showers I've taken, yet the propane tank isn't even close to being empty. I found a Rubbermaid container
that fits perfectly over the entire unit for when I'm not using it. (Birds, rain, leaves, etc.) The only thing I would like to see is Eccotemp come up with a safe, vented, and approved way of installing this unit indoors. If they could do this, and still maintain a low price, I'd buy up every share of stock in their company I could get my hands on! Excellent product!! By the way, the water heater makes an excellent gift for the person who seemingly has everything. They will think of you and appreciate your gift every time they use it.
I bought this because my stock attwood tank had a leak. I was able to replace my electric and propane water heater with this cheap...er unit by doing some plumbing. Problem with
this heater is it shuts off every once in awhile but all you have to do is turn the water switch off and on real quick to reset the pressure switch inside to start making hot water again. Overall it delivers hot water and it never runs out. Not sure exactly how much propane its really going to use yet though. Make sure to plumb this thing outside like I did
if your going to use it as a permanent fix because the exhaust is smelly and deadly.
The water heater itself works great. The only problem that we had was with the hose and shower head which leaked. We
went to the ...local Walmart and purchased a differenthose/showerhead assembly and had no further problems.
I have a seasonal campsite and this tankless water heater is the perfect addition to my outdoor shower area. The unit works well a...nd provides ample hot water for a great shower. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to install an outdoor shower. Being as easy to install and connect, it will be perfect when I must remove it for winter storage. I would recommend to anyone.
The unit its self works good (not great ) enough hot water but you have to keep playing with the controls. Also the hose that conn...ects to the shower head isnot very good. I had to use my shower head because the outer skin swelled up and started to leak.
Using a 35psi water pump, after contacting eco-temp of this problem they had no
replacement hose to fullfill there warranty, but wanted to sell me a premium hose
(being a stainless steel hose) for $29.00. I feel that this product for the price I paid
could have came with a better hose.
This is the second unit I've purchased. Left the first hanging in the shed and the mice loved
it for building a nest. I now stor...e the new unit in a plactic mouse proof container.
Plenty of hot water at a good flow. I/we use at our private camp site where I built a semi
portable shower stall. The wife, daughter, son-in-law, 3 grandkids and myself took showers
one after the other with plenty of hot water. Only limit hot water is the size of your LP tank.
Working on the fittings to hook it up our outside kitchen sink.
We found that some times the public restrooms are not so
good looking so we got this one and we love it camping and
taking 2-3 s...hower a day is worth it just make sure you have
the right plugs in the right ones or you will be not using
it for a wile and do make sure the water hose is tight so
it does not splash up and fry all the cables inside we call
and the send us a new one great for that warranty you mess
up and they replace it we love it not too hot for me to hat
for my hubby perfect
This portable water heater is awesome. I am an advent hunter during seasons of course and i needed something to scent down with o...ther than the hanging water bag which isn't the greatest thing.
So i found this and i must say I have been getting the hottest showers and fell in love with this water heater. I use a plastic 55 gal
drum and a 1/3 hp sump pump from home depot to my generator for power and 20 lb propane tank and a multipurpose utility room from wal-mart and i stay clean as a whistle. weather your camping, playing in the mud, or even after a hurricane with no power or hot water you can always depend on this heater. This is a hunters dream! Thank you Camping World!!
Your statement dose not say what type of water supply you need?
garden hose yes but can you get by with a gravity feed when out ...in the
bush? where there is no water to hook up the garden house. Please
responed to my e-mail address.
Good value and nice way to take a shower in the woods.

Glad I purchased this water heater! Simple to use, Endless hot water, adjustable thermostat is great.
Pros: Simple to use, Endless hot water , Adjustable thermostat is great. , Works Great Set Up Using A Shower Tent Next To The Entrance Of My Main Tent And Hanging On A Two Wheel Appliance Type Dolly With The Propane Tank On The Flat Part Of The Dolly For Stability
I purchased this product last spring and have used it dozens of times out camping in the Colorado mountains. It works great even ...at altitudes of 10k'. I use a 50 gallon drum, an on-demand pump hooked to my deep cycle battery, 20# propane tank and a portable shower tent. What an impressive product! It's well designed and quality constructed. It allows me to take nice HOT showers as long as I want. In fact, the only downfall is that I take longer showers than necessary! I HIGHLY recommend this product!
I have used these GREAT portable water heaters for quite some time now! They are AWESOME for use on Camp sites, in Cabins, on Boat...s, in Food Trailers, in Pet Grooming Vehicles, Sheds, as a Pool
Shower, use to prefill hot tubs, Get one of these and keep it in your Hurricane Survival Kit!
The design of this unit is flawed. The battery sparker is on the bottom, directly next to the gas inlet. I came around the corner ...of my house trailer to find the propane line melted off from the EccoTemp unit and a large open flame against the side wall of the trailer. The metal skin was wrinkling from the fire and the interior wall was slowly burning. Had I not been there with a fire extinguisher the entire RV would have burned up. So as long as the gas is flowing to it, this piece of garbage is a fire hazard. It's amazing they are still allowed to be sold. When I contacted the company, they offered to send me another one, no thanks.
Would give zero stars if I could.
Bought this heater to replace non-working standard tank. All fittings fit directly to existing fittings. Just hung outside the old... heater door. Works fabulously! Had to turn the temp down, water was really HOT! Got rid of old tank decreasing weight and increasing space. Only problem now is to configure an easy way to seal pipes, hose in side when using and then be able to move inside when traveling.
Bought to replace broken heater on trailer, works better
than expected. I have owned it for 2 years and am still
happy with it, ...haven't even replaced the batteries from the
originals I put in yet. Recently bought a 5th wheel with a
functional heater and I bypassed the factory heater and
opted to use this one instead. would definitely buy again,
and recommend it to people all the time.
I needed more than just an outdoor shower and this EccoTemp so far has been a wonderful experience thanks to the included fittings... and gas regulator hose. I've had it a couple of months hooked up to my camp water system thanks to the 1/2 pipe threads making the connections was as simple as I needed it to be. I didn't need the
included shower head -instead I use a low water use showerhead I already have. The plastic shower head bracket seems a bit flimflam and not too rugged for a camp product but if you make your own shower head from 1/2 PVC pipe and make a mount bracket with a plastic 1 X 2 material that can hang over the shower wall like I did who cares. The water heater itself is enough for me!
We used this water heater mounted outside of our house off the deck within a makeshift
shower curtain while our house underwent ...an 8 week remodel. Worked great for hot
showers and for washing dishes. The water was hot enough, though we kept it on a
lower gas and water pressure setting. A weak part of the heater is the attachment of the
shower hose to the unit itself. Twice I shut the water off at the nozzle and twice the hose
blew off the connection. I was able to fix it both times (with a little work). However,
thereafter I did not use the water shut off. I instead attached a shut off at the point the
garden hose attaches to the heater. Worked great that way for weeks. Never ran out of
gas. I would guess there is about 15 hours of use on a standard propane tank. Would
buy again knowing the weaknesses.
I originally bought this tankless water heater for tent camping at campsites with water hookups. As long as you have water under p...ressure and propane you have endless hot water! Then I bought a used travel trailer to camp in and continued to use this tankless water heater for outdoor showers as the heater in the trailer barely worked. After the first year, the trailers water heater failed and after pricing a replacement I decided to replace the trailers heater with this tankless heater. After a trip to the local hardware store to buy some fittings and a couple of washing machine hoses, I removed the old heater and connected this tankless heater to the old heaters connections and hung the unit on the side of the trailer and now I have endless hot water in the trailer. Then I lost my job and had to move into my trailer. This unit has now been in daily use in my trailer for the past three years still works great! The only drawback is wind and rain will blow out or drown the burner. If you shield the unit from wind and rain it will always light the burner give you hot water. I have recommended this unit to many people as it continues to impress me and I highly recommend this tankless water heater to you!
Pros: Simple to use, Easy installation , Endless hot water
We like our water heater. The only problem is the hose to the sprayer. The first time we
used it the hose burst 3 different tim...es if the water was left turned on to the heater. Other
than having to turn the water on and off to use it the heater works great.
This product is awesome. Constant temperature, easy to assemble, no leaks, (use the washers people). I can't say enough. I even us...ed it at a park on faucets that you had to hold down a plunger and periodically release and push again. There was no noticeable change in temp. and it just worked perfectly. The shower head has different spray patterns as well. I highly recommend.
I used it for my dog grooming business. Easy set-up. I also bought a shut off valve as the hand-held shower head switch is weak at... best. Had to call manufacturer to get a new one (switch didn't work). Fast shipping.
The heater works fine to a point. The hose was too cheap and broke and had to replace. Some variation in temp., but not great. The... hose angle bracket keeps coming apart and will have to be replaced. But the water flows. great. I would say it is a good unit with a little flaws to be worked out .
Great product, we had considered this heater use with the motorhome, as an extra
outdoor . but we tried it out and found that it... was extremly usefull for other applications:
ie. washing the dogs, outside furniture and best yet, the horses... they do not like
having a cold shower.... Temp. control is steady , even with start stops. great product...
I have been using this daily for 9+ months and continue to be thrilled with it. I removed my old h20 heater, made a sheet-metal co...vered plywood door (with a half-round opening at bottom w/a half pvc coupling attached for pluming to come in/out) where the vent was. I
added another line with shut-off valve to the propane feed and hooked it up to the h2o heater. I fabricated a collapsable sheet-metal housing outside the new door and have the new h2o
heater hung on the outside of my mini motorhome. It is plumed in to the water system and I do dishes w/hot water and take hot showers. Because of the (well ventilated collapsable) housing, I can use it in the wind and rain. I now have extra storage under the sink. When I
take off, I turn off the gas line, undo the water feed and stash it in the new storage area where the old heater was, with room to spare. The only problem I had initially was not having enough water pressure for it to stay on. I remedied that by running separate feeds for the hot and cold lines (full hook-ups) and it works wonderfully. (I have not tried it with just the water pump.) It does not get terribly hot when it is close to freezing outside, yet it does get
comfortably warm (It can be adjusted to scalding in not close to freezing weather). It is so reasonably priced and a money saver. I love it and am thrilled to not have to hear a water heater continually going on and off, or pay for that wasted propane use.
I was pleasantly pleased to receive this item in 2 days. The shower head was leaking.so I hand tightened it and the leak got worse.... The connection was cracked. Checking further I found that it was made in China. Nothing new for items from there! I will say the heater put out ample hot water and the temperature controls have worked good. However I will have to try to replace the shower head. I hope it wasn't all made in China!
I love my new tankless water heater it was the hit of the camp out..my family was lining up for hot water to do dishes
it was so ...wonderful to have for all kinds of reasons evengiving my brothers puppy a shower when she got dirty..lol... The only problem I had was not knowing I
needed a water pressure coupler between the camp ground faucet and the water heater ..The tube separated and blew up because the pressure was to great so I purchased a pressure
coupler and Im going to use it next time ..I feel you should either make it part of the package or at least make sure
people know that it needs to be done..thanks...sharon
We purchased the Tankless Water Heater to use in our backyard while our bathroom (and
only shower/tub) was being gutted and beau...tifully remodeled. The power of the shower
head was great, and the water could get as hot or cold as you wanted. Fantastic
resource and a great option for us. As long as you have a water source and a propane
tank you can take a shower anywhere, whether in your backyard or out camping!
I use this on camping trips to avoid filling up the grey tanks on the RV. I also use it at
home to give my chihuahuas a dog bath... with constant warm water. Best thing out there
and I am happy I bought this one. At one time I stayed at Morro Bay for 8 days and they
had no sewer hookups so I used this heater to wash the dishes and for much more so
I didn't have to drain the tanks at all. They had good showers so they were good to use.
This heater gives you instant hot water and works well with my small propane cylinder.
I bought this water heater 3 days ago and install it on my fifth wheel trailer as a
replacement for the 6 gal. water heater it c...ame with. Now I have an endless supply of
hot water. It works great! So far it is worth every penny I spent on it.
The cottage is off grid and I have only a small solar
system not big enough for a water heater. This little
unit is perfect fo...r us. I ran a pex water line from the
cottage to the heater then to a tree behind the
sauna. I use a sureflow RV pump
to supply the cottage and this unit. You will have as
much hot water that you want. I love this thing and
wish I found it years ago. I may buy a second one
for the kitchen in the cottage.
We have two of these at our cabin, one indoor and one outdoor. We get our water from the lake and run the pump with a generator, n...ice and hot and you can have a decent shower. We run ours from April till end of September (before first frost). You do need to keep small filter clean if using a lake or creek to get water.
The unit works great with city water pressure , but when you go camping and need to use a pump, you better get a powerful pump to ...make it startup, otherwise you need to keep adjusting the flowrate down to prevent it from turning off and then you get scalded.
Portable units like SKU#37786 are only for outside use. If replacing a hot water for an RV, we have SKU#58893 by Atwood and SKU#81416 by Suburban which are tankless water heaters designed specifically for RV's.

I want to use it in my back yard. Is there any ways to get hot water without gas tank?
Unfortunately no. Portable water heaters like this are designed to operate off either large 20# style tanks or 1# bottles. There are Electric and Natural Gas tankless water heaters but are not portable variations.

What do you mean by fitting "standard" garden hose? 5/8" or 3/4"?
by Birdergirl – July 04, 2015
July 04, 2015
Is your supplied adapter female/female? And, as the title question asked, what, exactly is the other dimension besides 1/2"? Is it 1/2"F x 3/4" F? It'd be nice for you to publish this information because we can purchase garden hoses in different sizes. I don't want to get the wrong kind.
Regardless of hose inside diameter, a standard GHT(Garden Hose Thread) is 3/4". Male end of the garden hose connects to a 3/4"F to 1/2"NPT adapter which is screwed onto the "Water Input" port on the bottom of the water heater.

Do you sell propane adaptors for the L5?
by Anonymous – May 20, 2015

I would like to use the disposable 1-lb. propane tanks with this hot water heater. One of the Q and A's said this is possible, if you use the correct adaptor. Do you sell them, or if not, what should I look for?
This portable water heater is packaged with a propane hose with regulator and ACME nut designed to fit on a refillable tank with OPD valve just like a standard BBQ grill. You can use item# 24028 which is an adapter to connect the ACME nut to a disposable propane bottle.
by Camping World – October 02, 2015
As long as the proper adapter is used with the regulator hose included with this unit, yes. Be aware that a 1 pound cylinder will provide less than 1 hour of use with this heater. (up to 18 hours on a 20 pound tank)

Does this unit have to be connected to a garden hose or can it draw from a 5 gallon bucket of water or other standing water source?
The burner is propane fueled, yes, and the pilot ignitor is powered by D-cell batteries.
