Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover.... - October 01, 2008

I bought this book, based on the description as listed here on the Camping World web site. I had some good expectations, but after receiving and then reading the whole book (thinking it would get better the further into it I got), I was quite disappointed. (I read the entire book in about 45 - 50 minutes.) This is not a documentary of How to Run Away From Home After 50, but rather more of a how I spent my (extended) summer vacation travalogue. It is certainly NOT what was advertised. The tips and tricks - what there are of them, and there are very few - are either extremely vague, or way to focused on a specific locale. If you are just looking for a fun romp with a very nice couple, and you want to read about all their friends and relatives, then get the book. Frankly, I skipped over 8-10 pages at a time, looking for some substance. However, if you are looking for advice on selecting an RV, how it should be equipped, how to trouble-shoot (other than take it to the nearest repair shop), how to run a business (in general) while on the road, little things you can do to customize your rig, etc., then skip it. You can get all that information more easily either on this web site, or from the Good Sam Club web site. Another thing I found annoying is the heavy use of italic print. Maybe it's just me, but italic is just plain hard to read. Not that the book is totally without merit - I will admit there were a couple a humorous moments, but in general, it is not what it purports to be. Whoever wrote the sales description for Camping World needs to read the book first, and not just the first chapter. I don't really fault the author - unless she wrote the sales description - for it is what it is...just call it what it is. Just my humble opinion.
