Alway's used a 50 on our 5th wheel. The 1 time we were talked out of using it by park manager our unit suffered damaged. Never again will we plug in without our protector. Changed units & a surge protector was purchased before we left dealer lot.

recently traded our old trailer in for a new 2014 trailer and thought it was best to protect our investment. after hearing so many stories about electrical issues at some parks, we thought it was best to protect the electrical components of the trailer with this guard. Easy to install, also purchased the hasp lock, performed as claimed. we now feel safe that our new trailer will avoid some costly issues.

Reasonably compact, on sale at a good price, and as far as I can tell at this point appears to do everything that it should do to protect the electrics and electronics in the camper.

Surge Protection and much more

Surge Guard can conveniently answer your questions and protect your property: Is the camp site electrical pedestal wired correctly? Is the supplied voltage within an acceptable range? Protection from a surge with AUTOMATIC RESET? • I no longer check to ensure the supply pedestal is wired correctly with my voltmeter. Surge Guard does it for me. • I no longer come back from a two day hike to find the RV with NO power because my old surge protector kicked out but can’t reset. Surge Guard does that for me. • I no longer watch the analog volt meter make huge power swings and worry that low or high voltage will damage my equipment. Surge Guard does that for me. • I no longer need to check the power pedestal when troubleshooting a ground fault error within the RV. Surge Guard has done that for me. We work camp in an area with many power outages and surges. The convenience and protection that the Surge Guard provides is a great asset.

We spent over six weeks traveling this fall and used this surge protector every time we hooked up. Since some of the campgrounds looked a little unkempt, we felt it was well worth the protection. It worked well and did kick out once when we experienced a power surge that could very well have cooked our air conditioner. It was definitely worth the money.

We have a new 32 foot Jayco with all the bells and whistles and We were told by friends to get a surge protector or risk damaging the electronics...We have returned from camping at a Provincial Park and we had many storms go through which resulted in power surges and outages. All electronics came through without damage. It was worth the expense, even in Canadian dollars. But not happy with UPS charging me $97 in brokerage fees on top of my already paid duty and shipping. !!!! Outrageous!! I like the service at Camping World but if they only ship with them then unfortutanetly I will be shopping elsewhere.

Surge Guard reliable

July 18, 2013
With our newest camper, decided it was time to really protect it since some parks are not as reliable as others (electicity being finicky by nature) Our only issue to date has been that at some parks, the power outlets are low - thus not allowing the protector to hang in a true vertical position - and when attending The Rally in Syracuse we couldn't use it at all due to the power boxes being only 8 off the ground -max! and the instructions clearly state that it must be used in vertical postion to prevent water from possibly damaging the unit (and it poured the first 24 hours of the The Rally).

This is the first time we've used a Surge Guard. It told us the voltage was low when we tried to run the AC, and again when we tried to run the microwave, so we didn't use either of them. We felt we saved them both from damage. We were glad to have it with us.

This product works as advertised, protecting the electrical system in my RV. The display provides the necessary assurance that the power at the pedestal is what is should be. I keep it attached to my house connection and along with the coiled cable, it stores in my electrical cabinet easily. It came with the plastic security bracket and that has proven to be handy.

Used this unit for the time and fortunately for us we had it. A thunderstorm came through our campsite zapping the power. When all returned to normal we found our power resumed but our neighbor had been zapped and his electronics were burnt. Saved us many hundreds of dollars in repair/replacements.

30A Portable Surge Guard

When I first plugged this in, I noticed a Reverse Polarity. I read the information provided and found out it could also be No Grounding Issue. I left it running with the caution light blinking the whole weekend. I still had power. When I was disconnecting it to get ready to leave, I noticed that the plug was flatter in the outlet. The reverse Polarity message was gone and I was reading voltages and amps. Tilting the bottom of the unit, the Reverse Polarity message returned. I concluded from this that the ground was not completely plugged in giving me the Reverse Polarity message. I like the peace of mind this unit gives me, but the wire could be a little longer to lie flatter

Reverse Polarity Bootleg Ground

Just received my Portable Surge Guard last Friday and haven't had a chance to use it yet. Seems to be well made and I have read the instructions. I did however read on the internet from an RV site that these will not detect a Reverse Polarity Bootleg Ground. I called TRC and talked with their Technical Support, according to support the Surge Guard will detect a RPBG. Tech recommended that you plug the protector in without it being hooked to shore line power 1st. It will indicate on led display if there is a RPBG.

Portable Surge Guard with 30 LCD Display - 30 Amp

We had one of the smaller, less expensive Surge Guards for several years. While working in Yellowstone National Park this summer there was a Surge during a power outage. It blew our old surge guard apart. No damage to our trailer. Several other workers had no surge guard and a lot of items in their rigs got fried. The most expensive items fried were converters. One individual had to spend over $3,000 to get their rig back up and running. We took the plunge and got this one. The next surge she just tripped. Others did not learn the lesson the first time.

Portable Surge Guard 30 amp

Product works as advertised but has a design deficiency. The cord that attaches to the camp power post is too short. The size of the guard with its lock shield lays against the power box at an angle causing the plug-in to shift after a bit and slip out causing a loss of power! I had to buy a short thirty dollar 30 male-30 female amp extension to correct the interference problem .

We needed surge protection where we permanently have our trailer as the electricity has not been updated in about 40 years. The surge protector does keep accurate measurements of the voltage coming through and will let me know how many amps are being used at any given time.

Being full timers now living for a while in southern Florida we have a number of electrical storms and were worried about a lightning strike taking out our electrical system. We took a shot on this product. It is easy to install and if your electric service has a cover with provision for a lock, it seems fairly secure. Otherwise, it is subject to theft. We bought the locking cover that is advertised with it but that leaves much to be desired. However, as with any insurance policy, you only need it when you need it and it is nice to know it is there.

I got one when I got my new motor home. Went on a trip and at the 4th camp ground I stopped at, every site I was moved to showed a reverse polarity I got my money back for the site and went on down the road to another camp ground and this time everything check out ok. I just wonder how many people don't consider the cost to their RV if it not protected.

Very Useful Accessory

July 24, 2012
I have used my Surge Guard w/o LCD display for over three years now. I wouldn't hook up to a power pedistal without it. I have had it kick out several times due to low voltage saving my air conditioner compressor from possible burnout. I have experienced many thunder storms and believe this silent sentinal may have absorbed spikes that I didn't even know were there on line. On the minus side, I find the cord length between the pedistal plug and the device body too short to allow the cover of power pedistals to close completely. It has a tendency to hum rather loudly at times and that can be anoying if the pedistal is right under the bedroom window. The size of the device itself is quite large and must be manuvered through the electric power cord storage compartment door. Dispite these minor shortcomings, I wouldn't hookup without it!

July 17, 2012
I bought mine in 2011 and as such it does not have the digital read out. I have used it every time I camp. To date that is approximately 30 times. I am not aware of any issues at any of the camp grounds I have stayed at and so must assume that the unit has been working properly. Living in a rural area as I do I am very aware of power issues, brown outs, spikes etc. Knowing that these issues would eventually surface at some point in rv'ing I purchased the unit to give me an added level of safety where power is concerned. The only negative I have and thus the 4 stars is the placement / configuration of the cord used to plug into the campground electrical is sometimes to short requiring that the unit be angled or turned in order to plug in properly. This is as much a function of the design installation of the campgounds pedestal as anything but is something the designers should have taken in to account.

This is easy to use as advertised. It does take a couple of minutes after plugging it in for it to evaluate the circuit before it provides power to the RV. We have so far not encountered a bad power supply or any surges to our knowledge, so its performance in that respect remains to be seen.

We bought this for our 5th wheel after reading about power problems others had at campgrounds. We've used it at six various public and private campgrounds in the last two weeks. After two severe thunderstorms we've have had no problems yet. It works great so far, time will tell. The digital readout tells you at a glance the input voltage and amperage usage. The only downside is the price but we felt it was cheap insurance for protecting our appliances and inside electronics. Due to theft concerns ($300 cost) we were planning on buying the locking adapter for it but after looking it over and reading the reviews we felt it would be a waste of money. It's made out of plastic and doesn't appear to be strong enough to withstand tampering. We wish someone would come up with a metal one. We did find at a few campgrounds you can lock the cover of the service box with a padlock so that's what we do whenever we can.

Surge Protection will save you

June 14, 2012
This 30 amp surge protector has features I love. It will shut down the power to your RV when the voltage gets low and will also shut down the system if the voltage gets to high. The readout on the unit tells you your voltage and other information. It also shuts down for an open ground or wrong polarity. I have a friend that lost their TV and VCR because a high voltage wire on the powerline pole broke and touched the lower voltage lines That feed the houses. Several in the neighborhod lost appliances from a car that had hit a power pole. There is a greater risk for a voltage surge and low voltage in a RV park than in a house. I am very pleased with the unit in every way. Another companion unit is the Surge Guard Voltage Regulator which will step up or reduce the voltage as needed. If your surge protector shuts your RV's power down and the voltage is out of range you need this Voltage Regulator to use the power without moving to a different site. Number 1 You need good surge protection Number 2 You need voltage regulation I recomend both of these units.

I found out the hard way. We were camped out in a RV park, when for some unknown reason the in coming electic power went to 220 volts. This knocked out the circuit board in the A/C unit, the microwave and the cheap surge guard I was using. I feel much better using this unit. I don't mine the size as long as it works.

30 Amp Surge Guard With LCD

All I can say is you will have peace of mind knowing you took precautionary measures before something bad goes wrong (electrical). After you hook it up to the power pole, you almost forget its there until you leave. I would rather spend a little more now than a whole lot later. The LCD display is clear and easy to read. Only reason for a 4 star is fairly large size and inability to secure it from being stolen. I have seen the lock sold by the same company, but it is made of plastic. I would like something alot more secure and durable before someone steals my surgeguard. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who has a camper/rv/travel trailer.

I gave this item 4 stars verses 5 simply because it is bulky (the external 30 amp). as far as performance it is fantastic. I purchased this because I ahve always used a power surge for protecting my electronics. This habit comes from working in IT and knowing first hand what a lighting strike can do to your computer, oven, micro, ref., etc...Understanding the surge is not the same as encountering low voltage. I have recently been to a site where the low voltage almost cost me a electric tank heater and AC. This product alerts you to the more common damage you will see on the road low voltage. I have not been to a site yet where I have tripped my surge protector for over current, but I do encounter low voltage and reverse poll. With the costs of heaters, AC's, and the electronics in your rv this is a must have - internal or external I have the external.

Superb Operation but Pigtails Too Short

0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.
May 02, 2012
A credo of equipment design is Form, Fit and Function. Regarding form, the surge guard is reasonably compact for use in an RV utility campartment or outside. The form, however, fails to provide theft security by not having adequate capability of locking it to something if not locked in a cabinet. Form is also compromised by overly short leads between the unit and its two connectors. The short leads cost the unit one star. In previous reviews this same issue has been raised. For me, short leads create a connection problem when used in the utility cabinet with my Hughes Autoformer. Fit pertains to fitting an intended location, such as a wheel hub and bearings must have an exact fit to the vehicle. In this case, fit is not an issue. Function has to do with performing in accordance with operation specifications and it does exactly as the manufacturer states. Mine does not have the LCD display but has LED indicators. My unit has been in service for several years and has performed flawlessly.
