I've had mine now a year. Works great and I know the power where I'm at is good. Takes some time after plug-in to get power as it checks out everything. Bought a new diesel pusher and wanted to make sure power was good. No problems with it at all. We are on the road at least 6 months a year and weather has not bothered it at all. Good investment.

Product follow up

October 07, 2014
I purchased this unit in 2012 and used for a total of 6 weeks over a 3 year period. The unit was used in normal weather conditions and none were severe. The unit was stored in our Motorhome which is parked under cover when not in use. Prior to leaving on our next trip, I plugged the unit in and it failed. The unit had water inside the case that fried the electronic board which was not mounted in the case. I know all of this because I removed the case cover to empty the water out. I called manufacturer and they would not do any thing about the unit, not even give some credit towards a new unit.

Surge Guard

July 25, 2014
Purchased this 50A surge guard the same day that I purchased my coachman 5th wheel. Owned a new portable generator in order to power the RV when at a remote location. Surge Guard would not transfer electrical power to the RV. Looked at the display window and read Voltage Too High. Incoming voltage is 132 volts. Took generator to the dealer and had to have the engine RPM lowered. Surge guard probably saved me a big repair bill. Generator was new, who would have thought the voltage would have been that high. This unit is WELL worth the price.

with the electronics in the coach this is cheap insurance. like the function and the countdown tests before powering the coach. Saves me doing several electrical checks manually before hooking up. Wouldn't hook our coach up without one.

When you plug the unit in there is a delay to check for polarity and line voltage... it gives you a line voltage read out on both lines. I wouldn't go anywhere with out it.

Heavy Duty

Large and heavy duty with the most joules protection. Digital readouts are an added feature and useful. The bottom portion may be on the ground when connecting to short electrical boxes. Otherwise, it's what you have to have to protect your RV.

Though this is an expensive item, I wouldn't try to camp without it. Replacing wiring would be a huge problem. Yes, it is expensive, but only 0.6% of the cost of the trailer it protects. My only 'problem' is the near 2 1/2 foot length from the top plug to the bottom plug. I'm finding that some pedestals are so short, the lower connection is on the ground. Being a short 50A cable, it doesn't bend well. Not unworkable, just something to get used to with the move from a 30A trailer to a 50A.

We also just took delivery of a 2014 Jayco Pinnacle. Never had a surge guard or a problem with our two previous 30 amp fifth wheels but upon reading about the idiosyncrasies of a 50 amp system decided that the peace of mind afforded with the Surge Guard would be worth the money. Even though it is a little bulky is is certainly easy to use. The theft protection hasp which is sold as an option does not fit the power cord handle that was supplied with my Jayco unit.

New RV

We bought a new Jayco Pinnacle RV this year, and this was one of the first pieces of equipment we bought! I insisted on having one before we plugged our RV in for the first time at any park! We plan to full time it also, so bound to run into potential problems somewhere. We also bought one for our 30 amp RV so now have two. When we plug our 50 amp into 30 amp, we use the converter and the 30 amp surge protector. Very good product, I wouldn't be without it. It is not too bulky (a complaint from one reviewer) for what it does! Essential piece of equipment in my humble opinion!

Amazing Customer Service

August 22, 2013
This Surge Protector is amazing. We had the old unit and for some reason it kept taking in moisture in heavy rains in Florida. So I called TRC and spoke with a representative named Kerri. We went through some trouble shooting tips and I also told her that I had to remove the cover to drain the water out. If I didn't do this the surge guard would turn off and on, then wouldn't stay powered on. At this point of owning the older model for about a year and a half I didn't have the receipt so she asked if I would be able to send it to her in Clearwater, FL. Being that we were in Orlando at the time I figured why not. I sent it in for $11.00 and she received it within two days. After being in communications with her for three days she informed me that TRC was going to just replace my unit due to warranty reasons. I was totally in shock and awe when I received that email. I figured that they would just replace it with one of the refurbished units and that was fine by me, as long as it didn't take on water like the titanic. To my surprise when I received the unit in the mail on August 21, 2013 it was a brand new still in the box model with the LCD screen. I am still in shock how great the customer service is at this company. I will definitely recommend this product to any one that asks about it. We have been full timing since Nov. 2012 and have been to some really not so up to date RV parks. This is a must.

We were in a campground in Wheatley Ont. and when I plugged in to their power, the 50 amp surge protector indicated reverse polarity. I tried another pedestal and it showed OK. I called the office and their electrician just happen to be there on another problem. He came by, checked out my pedestal, and found that the receptacle had been wired in reverse. It had been that way for years, and he said I probably wouldn't have had a problem. Some electronic devices are very sensitive. He replaced the receptacle, and thanked me for bringing it to their attention. Better safe than sorry and expensive!!!

Works great.. Well worth the money.. The first time we used it there was a problem with the park power stand and the Surge Guard flashed red when plugged in. I plugged ourcord in with out the Surge Guard and we had fluctuating power. I replugged the Surge Guard and called maintenance. The maintenance man took the power hook up apart and found a loose ground wire and a fried outlet. GREAT PRODUCT!! Won't be without it from now on. Told friends to get it now.

Surge Guard in Canada RV sites

July 18, 2013
Used the Surge guard in a campsite in St. Andrews, NB Canada. Found a problem with two power posts. The campground Manager swore the posts were checked and certified. He misrepresented himself. Two Posts blew my 30A dog bone adapter. Using the Surge guard and confirmed with a DVM, I found a 30A receptacle and 15A receptacle reversed. Ended up using the surge guard with confidence throughout my trip. Good job!

We bought one of these before we took our new RV anywhere! It is very easy to use and works well, Indispensable equipment in our opinion! It protects the new RV and the inverter and all the wiring. We haven't personally had a problem, but we plan to full time it and something is bound to happen. This will protect us from very expensive repairs. We also bought this on sale, a good value!

Picked this up after horror stories from other campers. Ourrig is our home. So far very easy to use, however you need muscle to pull your electrical cord out of this protector. Will look to lubricate power cord prongs for easier use. I feel it is worth the money to protect such a huge investment as an RV. Happy Camping!

While I have only used the Surge Guard that I purchased a few times, I am confident that it will do the job if a problem occurs. I have the 50 amp unit with the protective lock box. The unit is built very sturdy and functions as stated. I recently camped at a very large RV Resort in Arizona with over 1,700 hook ups and I felt much more secure with it in place

January 11, 2013
Last summer there was a lightning strike just a few feet from our travel trailer. We were connected to the 30amp outlet and had our surge protector installed. The park pedestal had damage, 20a GFI was melted and both the 30a and 50 a circuits were damaged. the trailer and electrical systems were undamaged. We have since traded in our travel trailer for a fifth wheel and immediatley purchased a 50amp surge protector for the new unit. Our 30A surge protector still worked and we continued to use it for the rest of the summer. The cost of these surge protectors is a small price to pay compared to wire and appliance replacement, or trailer replacement.

Peace of Mind

December 04, 2012
While we've never personally had any type of electrical problem while hooked up (that we know of at least), I know others who have experienced a little electrical excitement. And that can quickly become expensive if it damages circuits or specific appliances. So I'm glad we invested in our 50 Amp surge protector. We purchased it on sale, which also helps from the value perspective. It's easy and simple to use and easy to secure while hooked up. Even when it's just monitoring things, it will always let you know how many volts your hook-up has coming in, plus how many Amps you are using at any particular time. If there is a problem with the inbound line, it will also diagnose and tell you what the issue is. It all adds up to peace of mind.

Purchased Surge Guard about 4 years ago. Everything works fine except the low voltage detector. Using a voltmeter, Surge Guard did not disconnect until about 95 volts. That's below their specs. However, it's long out of warrenty. But how do you test for low voltage, you have to wait until it happens before you know you have a Surge Guard problem. I monitor my voltage myself because my Surge Guard does not have the LCD display. But I am still happy with the protection.

I ordered and received my surge guard just in time. My next outing was at the Kentucky Horse park where I used the big and bulky surge protector for the 1st time. On my second day the juice was turned off on my Motor home. I found the 50 amp service was arcing and shorting out and the surge protector shut my unit down. I found the supply box had a leg completely melted and think that without this protection it would have transferred some of that damage to my unit. The campground repaired the box and every thing was fine. It paid for itself the first outing after receiving it.

Portable Surge Guard With LCD Display- 50 Amp

Decided to invest in this unit when a power surge took out $500 worth of power converter, microwave oven, etc. My park model RV is connected to a local co-op power source but there are still a lot of outages. This is a good surge guard & simple to hook up. I really like having a constant readout on both legs for both current voltage & amps being drawn by the appliances. It is even possible to tell how many amps an individual appliance is drawing by turning them on in sequence. I have had it operating for 5 months without a simgle problem. No more worry if the power goes off & flickers a few times in the process.

The LCD display lets you know the voltages and amps on each leg. I evened out my usage going by its readings. To aide in theft prevention, I installed a female 50 amp recepetacle (box) near the power box, then a cord with a 50 amp male plug going to the power box. I can now use this and not have to worry about theft as it is now locked up. I can also remove it when not needed, or if I sell my RV. The LCD screen makes this a no brainer. You can't beat this item. It is a MUST have item. Read about it in the April May 2012 Highways mag. You won't regret having this.
